I recommend The Witch's Cauldron for Dinner or Lunch, especially the Garlic Prawns

89 Rokeby Rd,
Subiaco
Western Australia

The Witch's Cauldron Restaurant. Fine Dining in Subiaco.

+1 for the Witchs Cauldron...

A place that I oftan go to for a steak is bar on barracks (BOB)... It's "pub" service, but the food has always been good...

The place I like to stay is the Perth Ambassador Hotel. It's a very reasonable price (around the $130 mark), clean rooms, and they have been upgrading it of late...

The travelodge can often be found for a very good price and is a pretty good hotel

Slightly out of the CBD, but I ate at The Bridge Cafe on Canning Highway at Applecross a few years ago and had an excellent feed (as did my dining companions). Would definitely eat there again based on that experience.

If you're staying in the CBD for a while there are a few serviced apartment type options up near Milligan St and in Northbridge. Might not save much but you can spread out a little.

The Crowne Plaza seems to do ok, again check prices. All the buses in the CBD are free if you're getting on and off within the CBD so it helps when you need to be up at the Western end of town. If you feel like splurging The Richardson Hotel in West Perth is the way to go.

The stretch along Gt Eastern Highway between the airport and the city has plenty of rooms for not much (some <$100) but once you're back there after a day you're stuck there (outside of a more expensive taxi fare)

Breakfast; If you have the time catch the ferry across the river to South Perth (great little 10min ride) and go to Atomic. Food is fine but the coffee is great. (I nearly barfed when I read the Rifo's nominations) If you've got the time try the John St Cafe in Cottesloe, great setting and their vegetarian breakfast with sausages (you don't get the home made beans on the meat version and I'm not that big a bacon fan) is always top notch.

Dinner will depend on how much you want to spend but you can get some nice Pub (grub) type food at the Belgian Beer Cafe (beware the expensive pints). A quick taxi ride to Subiaco, Mount Lawley or Leederville will see plenty more options open up.

I guess re hotel prices, plenty of people want to do business in Perth at the moment. We have some huge mineral/o&g projects on the cards for the next few years so I can't see it changing.

Some of our guys stay at places like the Aaron's All Suite hotel, just remember to request a suite room as they aren't "All Suites." Another option is Drake's Apartments with Cars in South Perth, one less booking to make.

A bit of a drive - Byford isn't even in Perth. Thats banjo country down there.

Almost as bad as working and living in Joondalup isn't it Winshester?

That will be enough of that thank you :D We used to live in Byford. Sold our house there about 18 months ago, now the place is really going ahead. It could almost be "in Perth". Postcode went from 6201 to 6122.

Turn it up;)

As for places to eat around Perth, I don't frequent the CBD too often, but there are places around the traps which can be very good if you can make your way down there.

Leederville and Mt. Lawley have some nice joints down there, I don't mind the San Churro's in Leederville, but I have a vested interest in that one. Little Caesars' chef has won international awards.

There are some great places out in the burbs, such as Attivo's (Flora Terrace-North Beach), Piaza del sol in Stoneham street Tuart Hill. Those are mainly Italian places.

Another place to look out for if you want a quick cheap meal is the Broadway Shopping Centre in Crawley (right next to UWA), there are a few quick and easy places in the shopping centre which can be convenient for you.

(O/T but it is sad when I can tell you where it is better to eat in KL but struggle to tell you any places back in my home town)

At least spell my name right Reggie ;)

And no, Byford is on the urban fringe for the south. Northern fringe is another 25kms north of Joondalup and has been for the last 8yrs.

+1 for the Witchs Cauldron...
+2 for the Cauldron.

PER people are very active in reviewing restaurants on Urbanspoon. If you're ever looking for a suggestion and quality reviews, check the site out. They also link up to local food blogger and expert reviews, so you'll get a good idea of what the place is like.

So after you moved out, it started going ahead:D

Are you FIFO, or residential now?

Residential. Have lived up here for 7 years. I said after we sold our house Byford started going ahead. We moved out in 2003.

just had a few days in perth - parmelia hilton. last stay there was during the 4x promo - 100k+ pts was lovely. found it a tired old hotel with great staff and a reasonable menu. at least the pool was open this time. CoCo s just across the river was excellent but Amuse had by far and away the best food and wine either trip.

I avoid hotel-like accommodation where possible and opt for apartments that tend to have more space, facilities for cooking (I get tired of eating out at restaurants), and sometimes have a balcony.

Although a bit older/dated, QUEST on James is around $200- per night (I think), has free undercover parking and is directly across the road from Dusit Thai - which has been good in the past. The hotel is also about 2 blocks (an easy 10 minute walk) from the James St restaurant/entertainment strip, where you can dine at Sorrento (Great) or Valentino's (Average) and others. Have been staying there off and on, during the week, for the past 2 years.

When I get sick of staying in town, QUEST Harbour Village in Fremantle has fantastic apartment accommodation in the low $200's - water views, free parking, upstairs/downstairs balcony and not too far from Kailis. About a 20-30 minute drive back to town, but the coast road is great. Staying at Freo breaks up the monotony of the CBD.

Thanks to an earlier poster re the suggestion of the Sebel in East Perth - I saw this when dining at the Royal Hotel (which I would also recommend), and will give it a go next time.

Agree with other posts about some great spots to eat in Mt Lawley, Subiaco and Leederville.

The current ICH sale has IC Burswood for $159 until May 31, if you know your dates I would be grabing some rooms as that is cheap.

I have checked the IC Burswood site for a 4 night stay in April and i can't see anything near that rate available? Am i missing something?

Oops, that's embarrassing. i just realised your post was 12 months ago. No wonder i can't find the $159 rate?

See a lot off Mt lawley, Subi, Northbridge suggestions but another area that visitors might also like is the cafe strip in East Vic Park, pretty close to the city/Burswood... Had a friend over from Melb a couple of months back and took her to Sebastians but lots of other restaurants and a few pubs also along the strip... I am not a gourmet eater, but seems nice to me anyway and reasonable prices/good servings...
