I fly to Perth a fair bit and find it's easily the most expensive city for hotels that I visit. I don't know about SYD as I live there but I guess it's not cheap either. Anyway staying in 3 star hotels in the CBD seems to cost around $250 a night for the most basic room. The fact that hotels seem to be often booked out on a given night shows that their pricing may be justified.

In the past year I've stayed at the Holiday Inn in Hay St which is very average - fairly old and quite expensive - the highlight is that it seems to be where the DJ crews stay so you can hear pilot talk at breakfast or see the girls (and boys if that's your thing) when they are going out for the night in the hotel bar.
I usually stay in Rydges across the road, where QF seems to stay. It's a bit more modern but also expensive considering the small rooms. Cheapest you'd get there is around $230 per night on a weekday - often you can't get a room for less than $280. I'm a member of their loyalty programme but lately one night of the week has been completely booked out when I've tried to get a room for a few nights so I've had to go elsewhere.

Last time I tried the Holiday Inn at Burswood which is a lot cheaper for a newer hotel. A room can be had for $220 per night if you pay in advance. It's quite good if not exactly central to the city but close to the airport. I can't afford the Intercontinental in the same complex but it's good to go and use the restaurant with the $40 (or is it $44) all you can eat buffet. Last time I was there a group of what I assume were students from SE Asia went back about 12 times! I can recall being that hungry in my student days!

As for eating out I've tried a few different places in the city but some places I've been to a few times and after a while the food doesn't seem as good. Anyone find this? There's a Malaysian place in Northbridge which has gone downhill lately - Takaza on that street that runs north from the station. Used to be really good.
Indian restaurant Balti on St Georges Terrace is usually very good, expensive for Indian but even so last time was not as good as before.
Some steak place in Murray St - you know one of those clones of Hogs Breath, Hard Rock with all the fake old signs - it was all right but not spectacular.
I find there's not that much in the CBD at all and have to go to Northbridge but they all seem the same. A pest controller over there told me to watch out for certain places - he didn't tell me which so that puts me off the whole area!

There was a similar thread a year or so ago but I thought there'd be more to add now.

Anyone got any recommendations? The hotels towards the river all seem to be the more expensive chains but if anyone knows a bargain please tell.

Thanks.

If staying in one of the ICH group in Perth, I prefer to stay in the Crowne Plaza. Although a little out of town (being down near the Hyatt), I do not like the Holiday Inn City Centre at all.

Try the Sebel Residence in East Perth, good hotel and surrounded by restaurants a bottle shop and an IGA, plus water views and walking paths.

The current ICH sale has IC Burswood for $159 until May 31, if you know your dates I would be grabing some rooms as that is cheap.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

You may wish to consider Miss Maud's Swedish Hotel on Murray Street (corner of Pier I think) for $196/night including buffet breakfast. Easy walking distance to CBD, East Perth and Northbridge. Have stayed there previously, although not for a few years, and is a very charming place in the heart of the city. Definitely NOT a big city-hotel feel.

Went to Perth about 18 months ago when SO working down there for a week. His work booked him a room at the Northbridge Hotel & as he had six 0430ish starts I got to amuse myself each day for breakfast. :p

That's when I discovered the Opal Cafe at 134 Aberdeen St Northbridge. Had an Avis car & drove there as I don't think it was that close to the hotel. This place had the best omelettes & smoothies I didn't bother looking elsewhere the next few days.

Sunday was quite busy as quite a few Italian families gather there for a bite to eat before church.

Another place I've been to is the Brisbane Hotel at 292 Beaufort St Perth. Was staying with a hostie g/f on an overnight in PER & she recommended it. Was a chilly May night but the outdoor beergarden had braziers so problem solved. Yummy food & received excellent service from the waiter. :p

Thanks for the responses. That's a very good deal for the ICH Burswood, pity I don't know my dates until about a week before I go each time.
One place I've found which is great for breakfast and lunch is a two restaurant 'chain' called Rifo's. Both are just outside the city - at Maylands and Victoria Park. Great food and the best Eggs Benedict!

Warks, I sort of gave up on the regular business hotels in Perth and stay at the Sun Moon Resort at Scarborough, yes it's in the suburbs but I found everything else about it out weighed the travel side of driving into town.

I have stayed at Novotel a few times. I have advantage plus membership so generally get a room in the mid $150s.

I actually don't mind it as far as 4* goes. I do recall the car parks were tight though.

I can recommend the hotel restaurant. Every meal I have had there has been excellent and with my advantage plus card the food is 1/2 price so value is fantastic.

I second the recommendation for Rifo's. They're also a good option for a casual dinner.

Actually that reminded me that parking is another city rip-off. Almost as bad as Sydney probably!
Parking at either Holiday Inn or Rydges involves leaving your hire car at the mercy of the valet staff (no choice) and they slug you $32 a day! At least it's free at Burswood if you park in the Entertainment Centre car park.
Don't know what they hit you for at Novotel, Sheraton etc but it wouldn't be cheap.

Can usually find on street parking for the Novotel or Sheraton - just read the parking signs :)

Same for the Crowne Plaza which is just around the corner. I have done functions at the Rydges and HI, cannot say the experience was great and the customers reported the parking issues.

Recently stayed at Sheraton Perth. Stupid parking charges were the order of the day.
Self Parking $27 after 2pm. But $27 per entry. So in my case we arrived in the afternoon, and went out for dinner. Would have been hit with 2 lots of $27. The other alternative was valet parking at $45 a day. Given that I dislike the waiting involved with valet parking, plus the possibility of damage to the car, I didn't see that as an option.
Parking was available on the street at reasonable cost, provided you did not stay too long between
9am and 5pm, or it may have been 8am and 6pm!

There was some recent survey that declared Perth the dearest Australian city for accommodation, (and Cairns the cheapest as I recall). I did find it relatively pricey when I went across last time, though managed to get the Parmelia Hilton for ~100 a night so it ultimately worked out well!

No luck on Fremantle, which surpasses Perth; the problem there is there is very little choice so they can charge more.

Hotels, and especially the hilton can have some pretty good rates on the weekend. During the week it is insane.

I've been aregular to PER since 1992 and have tried the Sheraton, HI City Centre, Crowne Plaza, HI Burswood and IC Burswood. The Hilton is my regular haunt, as my clients are mostly at that end of St Georges Terrace.

On my most recent trip (2 weeks ago Sun+Mon nights), the Hilton was $320 Sunday (too expensive, even after my 20% discount) and booked out Mon. HI was similarly too expensive. Crowne Plaza was $200 for Sunday night (Travellers Package which was excellent value - included free breakfast and internet usage) but $280 on Monday. The IC Burswood same up with a $230 on Monday night (thanks to Family & Friends rate).

Building in the cost of other expenses (taxi, car parking cost), is important to try and get the best value from Perth.

When the breakfast charges are too expensive, I head up Shafto Lane to a bar there that serves breakfast - fully cooked breakfast with cuppa for ~$20 and their Fin Review to read. Can't remember the name ATM, will try and locate

We used to stay at the Goodearth Hotel on Adelaide Terrace, and it has free underground parking (subject to availablity). Parking is a bit tight for a large vehicle. It was quite reasonable for price when booked on Wotif. Sometimes breakfast is part of the deal.

The Great Eastern Motor Lodge isn't too bad either. I think its around $120 a night, and only 5 minutes from town. Its on the Great Eastern Highway in Rivervale, on the left as you're heading in from the airport.

For a nice, inexpensive restaurant Sebastians in East Victoria Park is good. It is just past the Park Centre, on the corner of Albany Highway and Basinghall Street.

If you don't mind a bit of a drive for a late Sunday breakfast, head down to the Byford Bakery. Its about 10 minutes south of Armadale.

A bit of a drive - Byford isn't even in Perth. Thats banjo country down there.

Almost as bad as working and living in Joondalup isn't it Winshester?
