Weeks later and all that is on their website is some info on more roadworks...

Not true, QF have increased their baggage capacity for inbound flights by 50%, there are now 3 carousels to choose from  .

But due to the roadworks the inbound road is down to one lane

Qantas are tinkering to make do with what they have got, but ultimately fixing the airport is up to WAC. Where is the third carousel? There have been three carousels for a while (one to the left of checkin, next to the gate down that end, and two up the other end of the terminal)

Agree its up to WAC, I was referring to the main carousel area, the new one is adjacent to the main two in what was previously the VB/Ansett area, behind the Skywest offices, think it was the old GW lounge at one stage.

Goodo. Must be quite new. The two there didn't work well when more than two planes turned up together :)

First day was yesterday I believe, it was news to the Hertz staff who mentioned it while I was dropping back a car, one of the staffers wanted to know where the number of the carousel was indicated, obviously not used to having a choice!

Perth Airport is only still marginally ahead of Canberra IMHO. Absolute joke considering the state of their economy that they haven't been upgrading it a long time before the stuff hit the fan.

Totally agree on the latter. When I moved from WA to SA over a decade ago, I used to joke endlessly about the country town I moved to. Well after SA got their act into gear there is no doubt that PER is the worst of the mainland capital airports. CBR wins as it has cheaper parking. ;)

As an aside, here in the US, SJC is actually on a par with the old ADL (or current PER :-). Two widely spaced terminals that are completely inadequate for the amount of traffic. That said, they are doing a new terminal that looks it could be a clone of the ADL one. The WAC would do well to emulate it.

I think CBR is much better sized for the amount of traffic that goes through it than PER. While CBR does have some extreme peaks where it struggles, PER seems to be at a size where it struggles to cope with its average load.

It's a debacle here this afternoon. "The baggage belt is overloaded", the QF announcements say. Passengers waiting to check-in are queued up past security, where the hire car desks are. I'm waiting to check-in on 582 to Sydney, due to depart @ 2.30pm - less than 20 minutes. As instructed I've moved to the line where they process the next flight about to close and a conservative estimate puts me about 40th in the line.

Apart from the fact that queues at this airport are far too common, the big thing that angers me is the fact there's one line for Platinum, Gold, Silver and Qantas Club. And then there's usually only two desks (right now there are three) checking these passengers in.

Anyway, my chances of being on-time into Sydney are about as slim as an improvement in Qantas's on-time performance - increasingly slim!

I've been in the exact situation you're in. As a rule I simply don't fly QF out of Perth(home) any more because it's always a debacle. I really think they need to change how they check in passengers. Perhaps going back to having specific desks for specific flights, then as the close off time approaches they can put more and more desks onto those flights, rather than those that will close in more than an hour and just keep juggling desks around based on the lengths of the queues. I know it sounds like it could be chaos, but as just about anyone who has had to endure the QF terminal in Perth will tell you, it simply can't get much worse than it already is.
