Peninsula Bangkok & Beijing

Hi all,

Blacknox2B and I will be staying at the Peninsula in BKK for 3-4 nights in late September or early October, and after plan to stay at the Penn PEK for 3-4 nights to visit the great wall etc.

Any hotel specific ideas/ recommendations? I know BKK and surrounds pretty well, though would welcome PEK touristy ideas for couples. Cheers.

Cant help you with Beijing but you should really enjoy the peninsula BKK.A good idea to have dinner one night at their restaurant Jesters.I had sworn never to eat in a hotel in Bangkok but one night we were feeling tired and didnt fancy going over to the other side(river that is) so had dinner there.Fantastic food and service.Great at nights with the lights on the Chaopraya.Mrsdrron says the lavender creme brulee is to die for.Enjoy.

Thank drron. Looks like we'll be staying at the BKK Penn for 6 nights now so undoubtably sometime we'll be trying Jesters for dinner. I'll let the better half know about the creme brulee .

When you are at BKK, you must go to The Dome Bar!

A friend took me there in May 07 and it was amazing. Though it was pricey, the views are breathless.

The highest open air restaurant and bar in the World awaits you there! Truly spectacular!

In terms of accommodation, I prefer to stay in hotels in Sukmovhit Road where it is centrally located rather than say, on the other side of the river such as the Hilton Millenium (though I prefer to stay at Hilton hotels worldwide).

I still like the The Millennium. It has two complimentary ferry services to take punters across to river to River Plaza (& Sheraton) and down to the Taksin MRT/Ferry terminal. They run every 20 minutes.

When heading to the airport, I generally take the ferry across to the Sheraton and catch a taxi from there.

For the inconvenience of being 'on the wrong side of the river', it compensates both with this ferry service and being significantly less expensive that comparable hotels in Bangkok.

the Millenium is a lovely hotel, very crisp & clean! superb executive floor! as well as an interesting open area pool!
but personally, i just feel the need to be in the heart of things and staying in a central location is great........rather than having to catch their ferry shuttles and then a train to the main part of town........

Closest I've been to that area recently is when the BTS trains stop at Sala Daeng.

I like the SGS (Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit) or the WGS (Westin Grande Sukhumvit) for the direct access to the SkyTrain and other rail and a Robinsons. Couple of stops on skytrain to Siam Centre, Siam Paragon, and MKB
