Anyone know this years Penfolds release date?

I believe it was 15th October last year.

Have any reviews been released? Or are they released with the wines

I'm guessing around the 20th when DM are having all those Penfolds tasting events around the country

Thanks for the link, I had not seen the DM tasting events happening 6/8th around the country :(

Another RRP rise, I wonder what they will go for at places like DM

Penfolds 389 2010

Pretty delicious wine... got it at Langtons for $63 Ex buyers Premium

I really thought it was a great drop

Seems awfully quiet in here given the official release of the collection today. Normally there's a retailer price war on day 1.

For cellar door members, many in the collection available at 22% off RRP.

I'm glad we have 6 saved Amex offers for $10 back on $50 spend at DM's. With the 8% Cash Rewards and my free shipping, should be a decent deal on the releases. Am I better off buying elsewhere?

Now, the Grange. To be honest, never bought one never even tasted one, but would love to try one. :( Is this the year to get one into the cellar?

Here are the various scores for the year on the bin releases:

Grange:100 points Andrew Calliard MW, 96 points Campbell Mattinson (Wine Front), 98 points Huon Hooke, 99 points Tony Love, 98 points Tyson Stelzer

Bin 707 Cabernet: 98 points Andrew Calliard MW, 98 points Huon Hooke, 98 points Tyson Stelzer

RWT Shiraz: 94+ points Andrew Calliard MW, 97 points Huon Hooke, 95 points Tyson Stelzer

St Henri Shiraz: 96 points Andrew Calliard MW, 93 points Campbell Mattinson (Wine Front), 96 points Huon Hooke, 94 points Tyson Stelzer

Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz: 95 points Andrew Calliard MW, 96 points Campbell Mattinson (Wine Front), 95 points Huon Hooke, 96 points Tyson Stelzer

Bin 407 Cabernet: 97 points Andrew Calliard MW, 95 points Huon Hooke, 94 points Tyson Stelzer

Speaking incredibly generally i'd say 2010 > 2012 > 2013 (general vintages, not Grange in particular. I've never had one)

So yes, if you can't get a 2010 and want to splurge, 2012 would be the next best bet.

Not heard of anyone doing Grange tastings this weekend. That might be an option if you're on the fence.

In terms of "value for money" it appears that the Marananga is the way to go. More likely to be able to try before you buy too!

Finally, a note, from Tyson Stelzer: "Penfolds has added $5 this year to the price of Bin 311, Bin 23, Bin 138, Bin 128 and Bin 28, taking these labels to $45. The great 2010 vintage of these wines is currently realising just $25-$30 at auction. The release of the lesser 2014 vintage of Bin 138, Bin 128 and Bin 28 this month is not the right time to crank up the price."

Indeed.

In Adelaide there is a Penfolds Grange Celebration event at our local Burnside shopping village this Saturday.

Real discounting on the initial release day hasn't occurred for around 5 years now.

It was about 5 years ago now that there was a genuine price war between Dan's and First Choice when BIN 28 could be had for under $10 a bottle and BIN 389 was under $25 a bottle. I think they both got burned during this time as Fosters/Treasury wine sent out staff with corporate credit cards to buy back every bottle that they could at those very low prices.

Needless to say that my trolley was full that year!

Helpful note, thanks Robtemt. Just read the first Vivino review on the Grange 12 - and they said THIN!! That was one of the top Aussie contributors too. Umm, not what you would associate with a 98-100 pointer with an $850 price tag! They raved about the 707 though. I'm keen to try it now to see if it's all marketing hype or a genuine crazy good wine.

Got this flyer as well, whilst I like Grange, the limited amount I have tried, this offering has great appeal for those with deeper pockets.. a lot of very interesting wines that would give better QPR.... would make for a great night.

No rating from CM on the RWT?

Prices for the new release Penfolds seems very high to me, Grange I consider over-rated (although I have only tried about 10 or so vintages) and you can pick up great vintages for less than new release prices. Last year I picked up a 1999 from Langtons for ~$400 which was very good, and a 2002 for slightly more which was exceptional. I don't see how Grange can sustain $750 prices and I predict we will see them come through the grey market just before the next vintage release.

You can get St. Henri for $55-$60 through Langtons, often less, Yattarna is ludicrous given the competition (eg. Art Series, Giaconda). Magill Estate and 407 are probably the closest to what I would consider value for money.
