This! But absolutely not the Australian way. Whether it's the rolling stock, or the ticket system, or submarines, or the internet, or even nuclear power, we have to reinvent the wheel at 10x the initial cost to get something that's half as good as something that's existed in other parts of the world for decades.

After a trip to Japan and at the start of the Victorian Govt's piss-poor & nonsensical idea (of many) to build a spur line to run from Cheltenham to Monash with no business plan. & other rail works in the pipeline. It occurred to me we should contract the Japanese to bring the equipment, the workers, materials, ticketing system & absolutely anything to do with the project. It would have come in on time, on budget, and operate seamlessly. Presently waiting for Santa, the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny to second my suggestion

I recall on one occasion we actually resorted to weighing each pax individually to avoid having to offload people. It worked because many of the OPSAT pax were women and kids who were u der the standard weight. But it did cause a long delay. Still, the price was right!

Back when East West Airlines did the Alice Springs to Sydney run using a F28 jet, all the passengers got weighed as they were on the limit with fuel. One trip back to Alice Springs they had to drop into Broken Hill to top up the fuel.
