Does your current passport remain valid after applying for a new one?

I have a passport renewal interview tomorrow (18th) and a trip on the 30th.

My passport doesn't actually expire until October, but I'm applying now so that I will have a new one for my RTW in September and plenty of time to apply for any visas.

However, after photos, forms and making the appointment, a trip to NZ has come up.

TIA.

I just applied for a new one in Shnaghai AUS Consulate the other week and nthey wanted to take my passport there and then, but I needed it to fly back to Fuzhou. So I posted it the next day..
In short, they cancelled it when I posted it to them. I will have the old and the new tomorrow.

A lot of countries dont allow entry on passports with less than 6 months validity, worth checking until your new one arrives!

When I last renewed, the Australia Post staffer cut off the machine readable strip of my still current passport at the "interview", effectively cancelling it. So certainly need to check with your local post office if you need your old passport between the "interview" and the new one arriving.

Good point. New Zealand require 3 months validity past your date of leaving New Zealand.

My passport expires 03-10 and I'm leaving NZ again on the 3rd of July. Might be too close, so I'll check with them.

I might have to pay for the Express service.

I've just spoken to NZ Immigration and they tell me that the 3 month rule doesn't apply to me as I'm a dual Aus/NZ citizen.

So, I think I'd better cancel my passport interview and re-book when I get back.

if a dual citizen, I assume you hold two passports. That means you are required to use your Australian passport when leaving/entering Australia and your NZ passport for entering/leaving New Zealand. So might be worth checking with Australian Dept of Immigration about any minimum validity period for leaving/entering Australia on your Australian passport.

I didn't know about the usage requirements.

My NZ passport expired 2 or 3 years ago.

Perhaps I'd better use the express passport issuing service.

They did the same to my passport when I last got it renewed.

+1 ....and the the post office operative wasn't too gentle with the scissors. By the time he'd finished my poor passport looked like had been through a shredder!

I've just got back from the interview and as advised, the encoded section was cut off.

I actually had to make two trips. I'd slightly gone outside the edges of the signature box and then slipped while signing the spare panel, so I had to go home and re-print the form.

Still, done now and the new one should be here on Wednesday.

Same thing happened to my wife went outside the box but lady at post office said sign in the second box as you have 2 chances Have just received email saying my passport is ready haven't received one for my wife so will see what happens

New passport arrived today, 22-06-2010, very efficient.

Thought I'd hop on to qantas.com and fill the Advance Passenger Info page for my US trip in September. No good. Apparently the passport's expiry date of 21-06-2020 is invalid. I'll give a few days and try again.

Same thing happened to me last month. It took less than a week for the new passport to arrive.
