Hi All,

An interesting question regarding passports. I live in Australia and have 3 passports (1 Australian, 2 UK passports). I got an extra UK passport for Visa processing times since my job means I will need a lot of visas. I am working in Brazil and I am trying to decide which passport I should fly out on considering I am planning on staying in Brazil for quite a long time (the visa I got is a work one since that is my primary purpose for going there).

I gave the company I work for one of my UK passports since it gives me more options and freedom with regards to Brazil (or so I think, eg Visa fees). Does this mean I have to fly out on the UK passport and return on the same passport since it is the one that is going to be stamped with the Visa? This will mean when I return to Australia I will have a longer delay through customs, is there a way I can fly out on the UK one and return on the Aus one? Trying to get my head around it all.

Thanks

If you have an Australian passport you have to use it when you enter the country. I'm not sure about leaving the country, but I imagine the rule is the same - I think if you tried to leave on your UK one they would question why you were in the country without a visa / ETA.

Why not just enter/leave Australia on your Australian passport and then enter Brazil on your UK one. There's no law against taking two passports with you overseas.

That actually makes a lot of sense, surprised I didn't think of that  So basically I fly out on my AUS, Arrive in Brazil with the UK, depart Brazil with the UK, Arrive in Aus with AUS :!: Makes sense to me. Thanks

Almost right.

The above is correct as regards customs/immigration but not regarding the airline.

When checking in for your flight Australia > Brazil you'll have to show your UK passport to the airline check-in agent as that's the one that will allow you to enter Brazil. Then, after check-in, exit Australia on your Australian passport. Use Your UK passport to enter Brazil.

I'm in the same boat, having dual UK/Aus citizenship and after successfully juggling passports on a RTW (including Brazil), I stuffed up on the final flight back to Aus. I presented my UK passport when checking in at KIX to be told - "no visa. you can't fly". Woops! -- Whipped out the Aus passport - problem solved.

The reverse applies when returning to Australia from Brazil. Show your Australian passport at check-in as that's the one you will enter Australia on ( the airline's sole concern is that you will be allowed into the destination country) then exit Brazil on your UK passport as that's the one you used to enter. Enter Australia on your Australian passport.
