Travel tip: The view from the top of the Eiffel Tower isn’t worth the lift line wait, the view you’ll get from the second level is much nicer. Also, if lift lines at the bottom are long, and you’re reasonably fit, walking up the stairs doesn’t take that long and is great exercise :)

P.S. Welcome!

Look for places in the 17th, 8th or 1st arrondisament. Quick tip: the post codes end with the arrondisament number, eg the 17th is 75017. The metro is fantastic and the best way by far to get around. They also have a great rental bike network which is good if the weather is nice.

Enjoy!

They are quite close to the action, tourist attractions etc. You can cover a lot of what most people want to see by foot in Paris and they are a good starting point.

#1 is technically the centre, not far from the Notre Dame, short walk to the Louvre, etc.
#8 is near the Eiffel Tower
#17 is near the Champs and Arc de Triomphe (and where I live ;) )

For the metro, its best to buy tickets in groups of ten (called a Carnet). Works out to about EUR 1.60 per ticket/trip.

It's a bit touristy, but a good way to get your bearings is to take one of the open top hop on - hop off buses, where you will get to see most at a glance, and work out where you want to go back to.

We stayed in apartment in Paris the last week of September last year. We loved it but I booked it almost 12 months ahead. A lot of the best value apartments book up 12 months ahead.

As for best areas to stay I think you cant go past the 3rd, 4th 5th or 6th arr. Its close to lots of interesting places to visit. However you will find it cheaper staying up near Montmartre.

For a great view go to the top of the Arc de Triumph, you can walk up the 256 steps or take the lift.

Metro tickets you can buy a carnet (10 tickets) for 11e saves purchasing for each trip easy to buy from the machines at the metro stations. The metro is excellent transport, but walking is great too because Paris is so flat and the streets and lanes so interesting. You can also hire the velib bikes for easy riding around the streets.

I could go on and on I loved Paris and you will too

Thans so much Elen, es I realise the booking thing..it is a spontaneous decision really... So here goes. All the best, v:)

Hi

I will be in Paris from 9-14 September, so will just miss you. My first time there, so no expert. I think EURO550 is a bit low. I am paying EURO700 for a studio for 5 nights -1 arrondissement. Booking is through yellowstay.

Have a great time.

Montmatre was a good suggestion for cheap accommodation. Look for something near Rue Lepic.

We are staying in the 8th arrondisament in October and booked through VRBO (Vacation Rental by Owner). Same day response by the owner who will meet us on arrival and answer any questions we may have.
A 2 bedroom apartment with lift, apple computer/printer, laundry etc etc is costing us 1060euro for 7 nights. :)

OT, but this article was in the SMH the other day and I quote (which I found quite interesting)...

NEW YORK CITY has passed a law banning short-term holiday apartment rentals of less than 30 days. The law, which will come into effect on May 1 next year, will virtually destroy the booming internet trade in apartment rentals for tourists.

...Parisian authorities initiated a similar measure last year and it is now illegal to rent out a residential apartment in Paris for less than a year. However, so far, only one case has made it to court. What has happened, though, is that the pool of available properties has shrunk.

New York bans short-term holiday apartment rentals

We too booked our apartment through VRBO with very good results.

I wrote a trip report about our time in France, if you are interested. The Paris part is at the beginning, our stay was wonderful.

Thank you ellen10!
Great to hear you had a good experience with VRBO.
I have started reading about your adventure and am really enjoying your TR.
We, too, have been asked why we are spending so long in France - 5 weeks in fact. But I fear it is not long enough - as well as a week in Paris our trip will include a one week canal boat hire in Burgundy, visits to the Somme and Normandy areas, Lyon and we are only touching on a little of what France has to offer.

Roll on the next 6 weeks:!:

fifa - oh I am so envious! I would love to be going back in Sept......however may be planning a return to France next year with some Italy woohoo!

We looked at canal trips, Burgundy, Normandy are on our list.

My trip report is a little long but there was so much to tell. I hope you get some good tips. Happy holidays

For our recent July stay we used:

Paris apartment rentals - Vacation rental, vacation apartments - Paris, France

Very happy with our apartment.
Paris Apartment Rental - Rue de Rome Grand Duplex, Batignolles - 17th

The area was populated by locals rather than tourists with local markets and restaurants in abundance and so we enjoyed not staying in a tourist enclave.

Easy walk to Rome Metro station, and walkable (longish) to a number of the major sites and so was a good base to see all of the main sights of Paris.

Fat Tire Bike Tours were well worth doing.

I heard from a reliable source that the Paris fine to owners of short term rentals is €25,000 and the authorities are currently contacting owners who are seen advertising in any form. It may be to protect their hotel industry but in peak times the hotels are full.
It seems that quite a bit of stock of short term apartments have been getting withdrawn from the market just recently.

Take a look at HomeAway Holiday-Rentals. UK's No. 1 for self catering villas, apartments & cottage holidays in Spain, Portugal, France, Florida, Italy & worldwide.. I have used the site many times and not been disappointed. There are only a couple of choices in your price range (Paris apartments are expensive.........and the hotels!). The Marais (3eme Arondissement) is a nice area close to Notre Dame and the Seine with nice shops, restaurants, etc. The Metro is excellent and easy to use.
Bon voyage!

Stayed on the left bank last time we visited Paris and loved it. Back blocks of 8th Arrondisement was very pleasant. Started hunting for apartments for a next trip and found a couple around the bottom of the hill on Rue Mouffetard, which we loved - near Metro Censier Daubenton. Also enjoyed wantering around the north side of Montmartre around Rue Lamarck, Rue Marcadet and would consider stopping there too.

Both locations not too far from centre/sights and had a nice off the beaten track feel, and apartments we looked at seemed reasonably priced.

Sorry can't remember what arrondissements they were

Cheer skip
