I am looking to spend a couple of nights in Paris the first week of October with the Missus.

It's no surprise that the hotels are staggeringly expensive, especially in EUR.

I would like to spend the 2 nights in a 4 to 5 star hotel nearby the city centre. Does anyone know of a good hotel at good rates, or a good online booking website with access to reasonable pricing/ special offers ?

Thanks.

There are a number of options on the web for discount hotels, especially if you know where in Paris you want to stay.

I used Hotel Discounts a couple of years ago, and found it to be quite competitive...

If you are prepared to wait until within 2 weeks of the stay to book, then www.wotif.com has numerous 4 to 4 1/2 star hotels listed in Paris, with good detail of facilities. Though note that the star ratings seem to be "self-rated" by the properties themselves so follow-up research ought to be done. The site www.tripadvisor.com has brief consumer reviews posted about many hotels worldwide.

Or you could just use those sites to shortlist some hotels and find a cheaper way to book them...

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

And you could check directly with the hotel chain web-sites e.g. www.hilton.com which have a few different hotels in Paris. Sometimes they have promotions advertised there. For example, they had 15% off selected hotels in Europe (incl. Paris) for a summer campaign this year (provided you booked enough in advance).

In France you will often find the local chains like Novotel, Ibis etc have better rates than the US chains like Hilton, SPG etc.

Last time I was in Paris I stayed at the Hilton at CDG. The train takes about 30 mins into central Paris and the train station is about 100m from the hotel. It was especially convenient for me as all accommodation in Paris was very expensive (it was the weekend of the Paris Airshow) and 90% of people leaving the air show by train were heading back into Paris, while we went outbound to the hotel at CDG. But its not overly convenient if you want to be in central Paris for more than just a day.

I have also stayed at the Novotel at Gare de Lyon. Could walk from there to places like Notre dame. Since this stay was using my own money, I was looking for somewhere that represented value for money - and our departure from Paris was by train for Gare de Lyon so it was also very convenient. Lots of restaurants around there also.
