I do think this is a significant event in aviation - the largest passenger aircraft ever built and it makes it's first flight into a small country like Australia - quite a coup for Sydney. I really do not understand why the journos are so aggrieved -

There's a difference between reporting the event and providing a 4 page wraparound advert for SQ though isnt there

I still don't see it as being that significant tbh; interesting and report worthy but it's only claim to fame is being big

I think the Airbus marketeers would disagree that it only has one claim. How about these as well:
  • Most fuel efficient airliner (on a per-seat basis)
  • Most delayed commercial airliner
  • Quietest large commercial airliner
  • Most expensive commercial airliner
  • Most hyped commercial airliner of the 21st century

Hmm ... I see what you mean

I would have thought they were neck and neck with the (still to fly) 787 on this one.

I guess everyone' view is different. Even though I think the 787 is going to be more of a commercial success than the A380, I still think the A380 takes the prize so far for the most hyped airliner. Nearly everyone has heard of the A380 and what it stands for, but I suggest fewer people (outside communities like this of course) know many details about the 787.

I think when you look at the trash that's usually printed in News LTD papers, the A380's arrival is pretty big news. Maybe the journos resented not being able to print an extra 4 pages of tabloid bull****.

I think the fact that the 380 is flying makes the 787 win the prize

For those that don't understand the journos POV and haven't read the link, "We reckon that it imperils the prestige and integrity of the paper," she told AAP. "It shows that our masthead can be bought, it lets our readers down and it places the reputation of our reporters at risk," she said.

Fairly important issues when it comes to credibility, which is paramount when it comes to reporting the news. Can SMH readers expect truly objective coverage of SQ (and subsidaries) news items now? Pretty interesting timing with Tiger about to take off.

I suspect, if the paper had stated that it was a paid advertorial, then the journos probably wouldn't be too miffed. Going by the editor's quotes, there wasn't any such declaration.

I tend to agree with them. Had it been an insert, with advertorials declared, they (and any reasonable person) wouldn't have had any problem with it.

Maybe it'll get a run on Mediawatch tonight?
