I have previously been able to upgrade a fare from Y to J on the QF website by using the change function under manage my bookings.

The change function now only seems to provide alternative Y fare options, not J, and as such I cannot seem to change a Y fare to J online.

It seems to be an oversight following the new website which no longer displays both Y and J fare options alongside each other. Am I missing something, or does this change now need to be done on the telephone?

Is the flight you are talking about have all economy? Ie flight to from Karratha and Melbourne are all economy despite having business seats.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

No you are not missing anything.

Qantas have stuffed up big time here and are probably losing additional revenue because of it.

Yes, definitely a route with J, so my suspicion is confirmed. Will call up and do it the hard way!

Yep, Qantas were hell bent on integrating the award booking engine with the revenue engine - adding the additional column meant business class got the boot.

It's really annoying for some I know who have travel booked by their work on Flexi fares and were in the habit of paying a few additional $$$ to upgrade to a discount business.

You may be able to get the service fee waived as you can no longer do this online.

e.g. B class Flexible Fare MEL-SYD is $542, I class Business fare is $587, so for $45 they would upgrade to Business class online. Now they need to call and the the CSA invariably tries to whack them with a $40 'service fee' on top of the fare difference for something that can no longer be done online.

My recent experience has been that, if you make it clear to the CSA that you are calling because it can't be done online, they immediately understand there is no service fee.

Failing that, hang up and call again.

It's something I used to do as well while cruising the net sometimes as an ad hoc thing. But haven't since they changed it, so I guess they don't need my money.

Well all done on the phone with a friendly rep. They volunteered that the $40 would not apply since I had mentioned it was not possible to do online. Somewhat painless, yet like others have said, I would be much more likely to do this in future if I could do it myself online.
