Packing Tips

I prefer the term, Murse. :)

I prefer neither, but the reality is that pockets only hold so much and it's uncomfortable to try and relax on a plane with bulging pockets!

PS - I use the Samsonite cover all the time. Despite the claims, those hard sides damage fairly easily. The cover weighs next to nothing but I find it protects it exceptionally well.

I'm still on the fence for carry on but I think I have perfected the checked - packing cubes, as mentioned extensively in the thread, are my love.

Carry on I've tried a backpack and a roll aboard, and I think the roll aboard is good for international, while the backpack is good for domestic. Internationally I also take a small PacSafe crossbody handbag.

This is what I am thinking. Most of my travel is international but if I can get away with a backpack (personal item) and a rollaboard I'd be happy camper. Just need to find the right backpack.

Will be looking into packing cubes as they seem to get good reviews.

I believe in cramming as much as I can into my suitcase. If there's space for something then I find something to put in that space. Worry about uses for that something later.

I seriously do not understand the hand luggage only concept. I have a 30kg luggage allowance or more. I struggle to fit the things I need into the suitcase and that usually weighs ~18-19kgs. No way I would want to reduce that to 7kg.

For a moment it reminded me of someone filling as much as possible into stomach.

But yes, 7kg for me is not easy but I've learned to travel with minimal luggage/weight.

Convenience JohnK

Not sure I see it that way. Convenience is having everything you need with you. No?
For me it's about getting off the plane and out of the airport quickly. Mind you, I have three different locations where I live and I try to keep them self contained, ie complete sets of clothes, toiletries, shoes.... In fact I've even bought three identical electric shavers so I don't have to cart that either, so HLO is a viable option but things like a laptop very quickly runs away with the weight when you only start with 7kgs!

I dream of having a carryon trip only but as I take my husband everywhere with me, its never going to happen.

Tried once, got to NZ with carryon only but by day 4, we had to buy luggage as he found the rugby stores and went wild.

I'm luggage obsessed. Always looking for the best bag, case, handbag, carryon etc.
My latest love is the knomo range of totes, carryon and work bags. Not cheap but lovely and very well designed for organising. I'm a packing cube addict. Can't imagine packing a suitcase without them now. Also like some of the Tumi bags but they are overpriced.

Off to google Knomo and Im a yes to the packing cubes as well.

I have never used vacuum packing. A genuine question-How do you go about things once you are at the destination & take things out?-do you reaseal every day?

Yeah you pretty much just open the zip-lock at the top of the bag and the bag expands out. When its time to re-pack, just fold clothes, return into the bag, seal and then roll-up. You don't use anything else (ie. no vacuum is required) there are openings at the bottom end of the bag that act as one-way valves. The tighter you can roll it up, the more air that gets pushed out and more compression.

Ive tried to use the vacuum bags but unless I can steal housekeepings vacuum, Im not a fan of the roll up ones. Ultimately, I just take more stuff out of the bag, knowing in most places I can buy more if we need something.

I generally travel carry-on only, <8kgs, 37L backpack. Biggest tip I can offer to save space : Quality Merino Wool. Its pricey but it is so versatile, doesn't stink up like cotton/synthetics, its super smooth and comfortable, keeps you warm when its cold, and cool when its hot. Can be hand washed and dries overnight. All this means I can pack less clothing.

i can do hlo up to about 4 days , after that its the battered old black tosca with iridescent green tape everywhere

Mrs c why don't you buy a new one , its hideous
me lets see at the next baggage carousel
mrs c theres outr bags now i see why

i keep planning on replacing it but "just one more trip"
thats been 7 years so far!
