P1 Gazumping the front row of whY

I like being able to pre-select row 4, weeks or months out from the flight. Saves logging on at T-80 to beat the WP landrush.

There do tend to be low status members who select row 4 (still), and to be fair to Platinums I think this row should be blocked from non-emeralds right up until boarding.

On the whole I tend to agree with this. The only other exception would be really tall people. Not just above average height, but the guys who are over 2 metres tall, I think they should be given a chance at row 4 before ordinary passengers.

Anyway I think row 4 goes through a lot of last minute seating changes. As frequent fliers typically are the ones that go for ODUs and change their travel plans at the last minute. So no matter what you will likely see no/low status passengers pop up in row 4 every now and again.

Some of my recent booking have been 24 hours out from departure and I have been able to select row 4 alise or window. Not sure if this is just luck or if they are actually holding some seats in row 4 for late P1 and CL bookings.

And I do not think anyone is begrudging you this right.

I agree. I have been sequence 1 for both SYD-BNE flights in past 2 weeks and I could not get out 4A which in itself is a Godsend if on a 738.

What I do not understand is why should a lowly status person be able to get 4C as it becomes available minutes after I have used OLCI? I keep checking back but I do not see that seat freeing up. :(

I don't think the 'lowly status person' is getting 4C right after you - it's more likely much closer to departure eg if 4C was unavailable to you it wouldn't be available to a nil status person but earmarked via theoretical seating for Trippin for example. Trippin may receive 4C when checking in at the airport then in the JL decide he want to do an ODU so 4C is subsequently released for use by others.

As mentioned before, if pax is transferred from another flight to yours using the 'force transfer' facility, it will override those seating protocols & bob's your uncle Mr or Ms Nostatus is is row 4!

I know you know way more than I do on seating but let's agree that are a number of anomalies that may not be able to be fixed.

I lost count how many times I check to see if 4C was free for today's flight but everytime 4BC were allocated. The last time I checked was at ~5:30pm for a 7:05pm flight and then headed off to airport.

Low and behold I sat next to a "lovely young(ish) couple who think JQ is OK and fly once in a blue moon" and yet had the coveted 4C. It is simply wrong for all the wrong reasons.

Sorry if I am disagreeing with you....

There is one sure way (works 95% of the time) of getting almost any seat on the plane. You've told me you know this method via PM, so I'm not sure why you would be bothered with stuffing around checking multiple times.

Johnk, you normally travel at around peak times when the are plenty of high status domestic travellers are flying.

Really, if you want that row 4/23 seat then you need to be on it from T-80. Hourly and by the minute after OLCI'ing.

It was interesting yesterday when booking my daughter and her family of 6 (2 Ad, 2 Ch, 2 In) on flights yesterday when their seat allocation was no further forward than row 19 on basically unallocated aircraft (MEL-CNS) - count your blessings.

I may still have the PM but I do not quite remember how to get almost any seat I want 95% of the time. It may have been possible before but it certainly is not possible now.

Do you know if the children were booked with the passenger type of 'child' or were they just booked as adults?

If they are booked as a child the whole booking will have a higher PCV so they'll see a greater selection of seats on offer.

I take it your daughter doesn't have elite status?

Just booked my first domestic flight with QF since August 2011 and I must admit I do like being able to select row 4, at booking, on a 737. (It doesn't compensate for QF's inability to deliver priority boarding though so this is pretty much a one off.) I'll be interested to see if I get the shadow next to me.

Just hope you're not on a 734 then Tony.

Apparently weekends are no good for priority boarding either!!! I'm flying on a Sunday so I know I won't receive priority boarding. (Should be the only domestic QF flight, barring connections to Sydney for International flights, for me this year. :-|

I read that somewhere on AFF but I think Barbie or Ken who said that needs to have a bit of a rethink! :p

Flying BNE-MEL in a couple of weeks. Mrs and Miss Aus ATC are joining me on the flight on a separate PNR. Have linked the bookings and secured 6DEF (Mrs Aus ATC is PS and could only see row 19! as available via seat selection).
As a lowly WP I'm hoping that at T-80 I can move the 3 of us to Row 4 - it will be a bit of a shock to the system if I have to slum it in Row 6 with Mrs and Miss!!
