Ozjet Airlines suspends flights

Sad to see this happen to Ozjet.

BUSINESS class airline OzJet, Australia's newest domestic passenger carrier, has suspended its scheduled flights between Melbourne and Sydney.

OzJet chairman Paul Stoddart said in a statement tonight the decision to immediately stop flying scheduled services was made with great regret.
"Unfortunately, for whatever reasons, we have not had the support we needed to operate in that environment against big, established carriers," Mr Stoddart said.

"It's very, very disappointing, particularly, I'm sure, for those people who had started travelling regularly with us between Melbourne and Sydney and many of our very diligent and loyal employees.

"Sad to say, there have not been enough of those regular customers.

"We will now concentrate, with a reduced workforce, on charter operations.

"No paying passenger booked on OzJet will be unduly disadvantaged - they can either receive a refund from OzJet or transfer without any additional cost to Qantas, which has kindly offered to assist in transporting people who have booked and paid for tickets with OzJet."

Certainly is disappointing.

It would have been good to see how Ozjet went on SYD/PER and MEL/PER routes - which they were planning to start.

I was actually more interested in the MEL-PER than the MEL-SYD given the length of the flight. Very sad :(

Bugger.

I flew with OzJet again last Thursday. My flight to MEL was approx half full, while the return flight was more than 3/4 full.

In both directions I sat next to first time O7 flyers who were overwhelmed with the service and had resolved to flick QF and DJ in favour of O7. In time, I am sure that the airline would have succeeded.

I'm really bummed out about this. I guess we can only look forward to DJ's "economy plus" seats for competition sometime in the future. Whoopee. :(

Hmmm.

Very bad news.

The real loser is the general flying community. Less competition = higher prices.

This is certainly a very sad day for the Australian air traveller. Not only have we lost Ozjet, we've lost all chance of a serious competitor for domestic Business Class for a very long time. If O7 couldn't do it with what was an excellent (and unrivalled) product then I can't imagine anyone else will be too keen to jump in and give it another try.

It'll be interesting to see if/when/what Virgin can do, until then it's back to the QF monopoly (ie: better off flying DJ)

I wonder how long it will be until QF removes D class domestic on the routes (formerly) operated by OzJet ??

THis is indeed an unfortunate development, and I was looking forward to seeing some competition out of Perth. I think anyone who wants to try this again needs to have some pretty deep pockets.

Thats a shame. How long before QF yanks the domestic discounted biz class fares?

I was trying hard to fly Ozjet ex-PER but no chance now.

I'm guessing this would be measured in nanoseconds. :(

Wonder what class the pax being rebooked in QF get?

Passengers who have already travelled one leg of a journey with OzJet and have a return leg booked for travel before March 24 can transfer to Qantas free of charge by telephoning Qantas on 13 13 13 by March 17.

Other people booked with OzJet but yet to fly will be automatically refunded.

Anyone booked to fly with OzJet who has not yet begun their journey can call Qantas on 13 13 13 by March 17, quote their OzJet booking reference, and Qantas will book them an economy class ticket at the same price, Mr Stoddart said.

Is it true that SYD-MEL is the 3rd busiest domestic route in the world? Read that in the SMH. You'd think it could sustain a 3rd carrier wouldn't you? But we've seen it all before.

Sad news indeed. But not surprising news.

And perhaps with the demise of domestic business-class competition, we may see the return of D availability on the morning and evening flights. When QF started selling domestic D fares, they removed any D availability from the popular morning and evening flights, making domestic connections difficult for people on international D fares.

In the interests of not being arrogant and unsympathetic, I express my compassion for the staff involved in this unfortunate situation.

Yes, I've seen this mentioned before a number of times. I assume the route could support three airlines. The problem is that a new entrant will always have trouble prising customers away from the much stronger incumbents, who have momentum on their side in addition to network connections, FF programs, inertia of corporate travel policies, etc etc.

Yes, this is true. The number 1 and number 2 routes are both in Japan.
