Changing a seat allocation does not force a push between reservation systems. So when QF changed you to seat 12A, this change will not have been pushed to AA's Sabre system. However, you the AA agent does the check-in for that flight, its the QF computer that is used for the check-in process and you will get a boarding pass for seat 12A unless QF decides to change it again (unlikely).

Please let us know how you get on with your request for extra SCs.

Sure will! It will be a couple of weeks until I'm back in Aus so I'll do it then...

When JohnK hinted that I was going through more hell than him, I thought "it's not that bad, a few phone calls, explain xONEx rules to both QF and AA a couple of times, understand what system my tickets are in and of which ones I should take notice".

I was interested to see if anything in the QF system did get fed back into the AA system so I was checking my flights occasionally through AA My Reservations.

Well, I checked yesterday only to find that the ORD-LAX segment had vanished. So I was now going SWF-ORD, LAX-SYD.. That's a bit far to walk in 11 hours I thought! I then checked the QFF website and could see all segments except SWF-ORD.

So I called AA and explained and they reinstated my ORD-LAX segment with the original seat allocation I had. When I asked what had happened, she said it had been changed by the QF system.

I thought that as the ticket was now issued by AA, only they could cancel segments, not a cancel feed from the QF system..
Any ideas?

PS. I'm checking my booking each day now....

Hope all ends well for you. :)

My Finnair misadventure feels like a walk in the park compared to what you have experienced so far. ;)

Me too.. The segment was still there today so I guess it's going to stay..

I would've been really p'd off if I arrived at SWF tomorrow only to discover my missing flight from ORD and then found there were no more A class seats left!

Now if that LAX-SYD F class upgrade will only come through :D :D

Hi..anda most interesting comparison.

Would you happen to havea similar comparison of QF vs AA for doing LONE4 if one had only just joined AA??

Cheers

I am in the middle of a DONE4 right now. Routing is:

BNE-MEL-LHR-FRA-DFW-PHX-DFW-MIA-LAX-HKG-KUL-HKG-MEL-BNE-MEL-BNE

If posted to QF, this would have earned me 1510 QF SCs and 80,300 QF FF points. But instead I am posting it to AA and will earn 59,588 EQP and 92,472 AA Miles and 12 AA 500 mile upgrade credits (just short of the next 4). These 92K AA miles are worth a lot more to me than 80K QF FF points.

Remember that you have 4 sectors available in your continent of origin (but only two stopovers), so you can keep a return domestic trip up your sleeve when you have returned. That is what my final BNE-MEL-BNE portion will be.

If you post your planned itinery, then can do a comparison based on your actual acitivity. With L fares, need to look at carriers used to determine earnings more than with {A|D}ONEs

Hi Dave thanks for that.

I do not have a planned route yet.

It is more that having joined the site recently it has opened my eyes to the possible benefits of AA and/or RTW tickets.

I am eagerly ""learning" at present and am weighing up things.

Part of this, as I am already a travel addict, is to now start examining an RTW as my next major overseas holiday ..say in 1.5 years time...so I have not thought about exact destantions yet.

It would include Europe.....

South America would be tempting though as I have not been there.

I have often been flexible on which countries I visit in the past so that I can capitalise on the best deals going. This has allowed me to travel more often (and not just flying either as I enjoy chartrer yachts...and a strategic approach to yacht charetering gets a lot more days sailed for less cost)

So us part of my education I am just trying to learn the max earn rates for different approaches so that I can then work out what is best for me.

It is all very interesting...and stimulating.

Cheers Scott

Scott, some of the things to consider include:
  • How much travel will you do after your holiday trip?
  • Will you be able to maintain status in the future?
  • What FF status do you hold now with various programs?
  • What do you want out of your FF program?
This last one is probably the most important. Are you looking for award flights, upgrades, or status benefits like lounge access, priority check-in etc? These things will influence which program is best, and may also influence the best way to build an ATW itinerary.

Note that I use the acronym ATW instead of the commonly misused RTW. The correct grammatical use is the word "around" as it is a preposition used to indicate the relation of the substantive "the world" to the verb "travel", while the word "round" is an adjective describing the shape of something (and yes, I do understand the world is round). But that is a whole different story, and as many people will point out, my grammar and speeling (and more often my tpying), I really am not in a position to make judgement on other people's use of the egglish language :p.

Egglish is a great language... I didnt realise that the world was round, I always thought it was an oblate sphere. Indeed, ATW is a far better and more accurate abbreviation than RTW :)

Hi Dave...

  • How much travel will you do after your holiday trip?
I used to be a Platinum in my old Ansett days....but only fly say for work (I changed employers and careers) say 4 to 8 returns per year (mainly east Coast) and say 1 return domestic holiday (FNQ). I am in MEL.
  • Will you be able to maintain status in the future?
Even on AA. No. So a challenge taking advantage of a ATW would only give me benfit for the year or so of elevated travel (lounge and elevated earn rates IF the flight qualify.) Most flights will be discount economy reddeals or above.
  • What FF status do you hold now with various programs?
I have only just joined AA to keep options open.

In QFF I have 980 lifetime SC (cry that all my Ansett status was lost!!!) and so am a long way from lifetime Silver and so this is not really a factor.

I am currently a Bronze.

I currently have about 40K QFF points (with about 17K in the system coming through) and 75K Altitude points.

I am a QC spouse member using the fact that my wife has cheap QC membership via Telstra and so I get it for about $200 odd before tax and I claim it on my Tax. This was very useful on our just complete trip as it allowed all 5 of us to use the QC lounges.

I have just returned from using 325K QFF for a family of 5 to Bangkok with return From Singapore.

My last 2 redemptions prior were 500K for 5 return Cairo tickets reddemed just 2 weeks prior to ansett ceasing. Luckilly Singapore Airlines honoured the redemptions despite flights beng 6 months later. My Platinum loung access was allowed on Star alliance going over but was cut off on the return, though luckilly the caio Lounge was not computerised so they did not pick up on my card being lapsed. Dubai did though :(

In 200 redeemed for 5 tickets MEL to Mackay to Alice Springs to MEL for 150,000 points. However ruls have tightened to rule this out now.

So I mainly seek to save points for International Travel only now.

  • What do you want out of your FF program?
Well the quick answer is as much as I can get for a lower cost than it takes to aquire the benefit.

In addition to my moderate flying (including wife who flies only say one work trip per year ) I have reasonable spend on CC.

Say per year

AMEX $40-50K at 1.25
VISA $40-50 but at 0.5
I currently do not pay any carad fees as my AMEX @1 and VISA are free due to mortgage. My extra AMEX @1.25 is free for 12months and then will mostly likely go uness AMEX make me an offer.

I only use VISA in AMEX is not accepted and majority is 2 sets of school fees.

A few points are also obatained from hotels, car hire. But say only several thousand.

If any bonus points are going I grab them.. ie 15K from AMEX and 4K from Etrade at present.

So given the above my current staegy (and remember thaat I mainly try and have my family of 5 flying at once) is:

  • To redeem for economy seats to interanational flights (yes I know that business class upgrades are better value, but 1/ it is lonely by myself and 2/ my low staus means that I think that I would often be too far down the status quueue???)
  • earning Status is not really an option given my earn rate at that CC spend does not count for status. However I would not rule out a AA Challenge (ie by paying for ATW for 5) to take advantage of a boosted earn rate for the trip and for a year or so, but would understand that this is temporary
Now...after having read the site after having discovered it recently the possible alternatives come into play.

Scenario 1/ would be to from now one seek to use AA as much as possible but the red deals would make the earn rate low (nil plus 500mile booking bonus) I some cases with AMEX being the main earner apart frrom when I pay for a holiday. (alos there are some grat flight deals about ie Best Buys and so in paying it may be better to just save $ up front)

2/ Would be to just stick with stockpiling everything in QFF where rededeals still gain 1000 points per flight BUT to still do say an AA challenge IF i do a ATW depending on what the point comparison would comapred to points for QFF ..and so hence my original question.

PS I have in the past redeemed say 1.5 to 2 million FF points on Ansett and Qantas with some of it on Business redemptions, but my earn rate is now a lot lower beacuse my work travel is dramtically lest (flights and hotels)

Hi again Dave...

After more thought I guess one strategy I could follow if I go the AA route would be:
  • To take an economy ATW, incorpate a challenge to maximise points and gain status.
  • To then make use of the status (which as QFF I would not get) for a higher earn rate for a second international leisure trip in the period before the status lapses (as I wil not be able to fly 50,000 per year)...plus on some busness travel though red edeals may prevent this.
  • To have stockpiled the points over that period so that say 1 or 2 years after those trips I have a redemption international trip.
