I am looking at booking a OW explorer ticket with travel commencing in NZ.

With the current exchange rate, it is quite an attractive option.

Obviously, the ticket has to be issued in NZ.

I was wondering what AA's current position is in relation to fuel surcharges? I know for a while they were not charging them, but I think this has changed??

Also, any other advice?

Thanks

If you're going to do this, do it before the next repricing (traditionally around November). *A has just last week bumped up RTWs ex-NZ by a lot due to the fall in kiwi peso.

AA is charging 1 fuel surcharge for Transatlantic and another for Transpacific , but that is it; it is still a lot better than the excessive fines that QF will charge

Even with the exchange rate, the ex-NZ fare still seems to be about AUD50 more than the ex-Au fare off-peak and about AUD200 more peak from what I can see though

Dave, I'm comparing DONE4s and AONE4s.

DONE4
AUD = $9,609
NZD = $10,239
Convert @ 1AUD=1.18NZD
= $8,677
Saving of $932 (9.7%)

AONE4
AUD = $13,539
NZD = $13,899
Convert @ 1AUD=1.18NZD
= $11,778
Saving of $1,761 (13%)

Ahh. thats a point.. didn't check those ( still got using TIP runs for premium travel in my mind rather than OWEs)

So the question is, should I try and book with AA?

I would certainly like to have it all booked with amadeus so I can view on QFF and checkmytrip

Or is it really not worth it?

Absolutely, book with AA, you will save a lot of money.

If you book on AA then you will see the QF and BA sectors on checkmytrip and on the QFF site

On the AA website you will be able to see the whole itinery , so I dont see any benefit in spending a few hundred $ extra to book through QF. Go for the AA booking

Dave

Do you find that booking through AA results in loss of flexibility?

I like being able to ring up QF and make changes over the phone, no hassle.

Can QF make changes to an AA booking?

You can make changes even easier through AA; have a paper ticket and make a change with QF and they'll claim you need to take it to the ticket desk for validation ( meaning , we're going to screw you for $25 ) , phone AA and make the same change and you can go straight to check in.

For anyone crediting to AA, then keep away from booking with QF since they are so reluctant to book an AA codeshare on QF that it isn't funny.

The ticket has exactly the same rules whoever issues it, if you want to pay extra for it, you are free to do so. If you phone AA to make the change there is no more hassle

With the cost saving, to me it's a no brainer where to book

Dave

So to clarify about the fuel fines, if you book with QF, they charge fuel surcharges for each sector. If you book through AA, you pay no fuel surcharges at all?

Any problems about getting points credited to QF?

Thanks for your help Dave.

Not quite true. Book with AA and you pay two fuel fines, one for trans-Atlantic and one for Trans-Pacific.

QF do not charge fuel fines for flights witin and between USA and Canada.

No

Just get the Qf number added to the booking and it will credit exactly as it would if on a QF ticket; if you want to upgrade to F using points on QF , you can still even do that

Well if I can save a few hundred $$$, then it sounds like a good plan!

Can you start putting the itinerary together and change it over time, or do you have to book and ticket all at the same time with AA?

You can hold it with them. I would suggest calling the AA ATW desk and getting them to hold it for you. I have held them for a fair while when booking through them. For payment , when ready to ticket, just contact AA reservations in Sydney

As Dave Noble posted, not a problem. Simply call AA on 1300 650 747 during Sydney working hours (or the US after hours). (Actually, I think that is going to change soon).

I have had to change an AA flight twice in the last week. They could not have been more helpful. :) (FWIW, The booking was originally made with CX)

I just rang AA and they said that they charge fuel surcharges for all the airlines.

They confirmed that if the itinerary contains a QF flight, then they will charge the QF surcharge.

They said this is a recent change.

I would suggest getting an itinery priced and seeing what the base fare and taxes comes to
