I have a TSV-BNE-DRW JASA booked later this afternoon. The flight is arriving in BNE at around 9.30pm and then I have the flight to DRW departing at 9.15 am the next morning. I know that there won't be any accommodation provided overnight (not really an issue for me as I have family in Brisbane) however I was wondering what happens to my checked in luggage? I understand that it's usually checked through but will I have to pick it up at BNE due the significant time between the flights?

Luggage will be checked through to DRW unless you ask for it to be checked to BNE.

Domestically you can't through check bags on itineraries that involve an overnight stop enroute. You will need to collect your bags in BNE after arriving from TSV then checkin again the next morning.

There are no staff between the last arriving flight & when they start the next morning so no facilities to store any tranship bags.

Just curious what did it cost points & cash wise for thw JASA with the overnight stop?

I found that out while checking in this afternoon, I could have saved taking the luggage to Townsville and back but I'll know better if I decide to try and do this again.

The JASA flight (QF977 & 824) cost me 24,000 points, IIRC the cash component was around $150. Mind you I booked it at the beginning of April so I'm not sure what the cost would be like closer to the date.

That's a good deal as I've only ever seen same day travel TSV/xBNE/DRW for the 24K plus $120 something. The only time I saw the option for the overnight in BNE it was more points.

It's handy to know for the BNE folk who do JASA runs as it avoids an overnight stay in TSV at the beginning as you could just position up to TSV in the pm then take QF977 back home.

The next day fly DRW/xBNE/TSV staying the night in a hotel then TSV/BNE the day after.

Sorry to be annoying, but can somebody please humour me and tell me what a JASA is?

A JASA is a Business Any Seat Award - basically using points (+ cash if required/wanted) to purchase a business class seat. They are always available as long as their is normal fare availability, but most try to get the U fare tickets as they require significantly less points.

As ronaldh said. (though I would choose ASA over classic in most circumstances)

the key points to note about JASAs (not to mention YASAs and FASAs) is that they are award seats that earn FF points and status credits. They almost always 'cost' more than classic awards, but the taxes and surcharges are included. You can also 'wind back' the point amount required which simultaneously 'ups' the dollar component.

an example: A classic one-way J ticket MEL-PER is 36K points plus $$$ taxes and surcharges (which may also be paid with points if desired). no points/SC earning.
a 'well-priced' JASA MEL-PER may cost say 46K points, with nothing else to pay. It will earn full FF points and SCs at business class levels. However if you have only 38K points available you can wind back to 38K, and it will add a dollar amount to pay as well. Still full earning.

Points 'prices' of JASAs roughly equate to the $$$ value of revenue seats left for sale...usually the closer the flight the more 'expensive' they are (there are some ridiculous ASAs available out there for amounts in excess of one million points)

They are seen as potentially very useful tools to assist status retention.

Thanks for the reply. Very helpful. I have never heard of these. I need to open my eyes more. Thanks again.

It was pretty convenient, flew to TSV on QF974, waited in the lounge a few hours and then took the JASA back. I did have an issue with the BNE-DRW segment the next morning, arrived at the airport to find I missed the cut-off as they had moved the flight an hour back without giving me any notification. I managed to get onto the Thursday morning flight with no fuss but I'm not too happy about losing a day
