I am thinking of travelling to CEB an option I found is MEL-ADL-HKG-CEB on QF then CX from ADL the QF flight arrives the night before at 9pm and the CX flight departs at 6:25am the next morning its all on the one award ticket (probably from AA) will I be allowed to check all the bags to CEB when I check in at MEL ?

Thanks

Are all the flights on the one ticket? Also which city are you spending the night in? I couldn't work out if you where staying the night in ADL or HKG.

I would say yes, but all you can do is ask on check in at MEL.

I was hoping for a more definitive answer lol but maybe someone else can help us with that.
If all i could do is ask I may as well ask for an op-up as well lol.

I wanted to know more as in what is the industry standard and would the check in agent typically check me all the way anyway knowing that CEB is the final destination and its all on the same PNR etc was hoping it would be more something automatic rather than something I'd have to kindly request.

But thanks for your thoughts.

Yes, bags should be checked all the way through, as long as any stop is less than 24hrs. But you won't be able to pick up the bags at your overnight stop of course.

Sorry, after I posted that I realised that it was perhaps a bit too short an answer. I'd edited the original post asking some follow up questions hoping that you'd see the edited answer before you saw the first simple answer.

All on the one PNR then yes it'll most likely be checked all the way though, although they may ask you if you'd like your bag for your o'nighter.

I am travelling FRA-IST with a 11 hour (overnight) stop in LHR. This is on one ticket and I too was wondering if bags will be checked to IST and I take some essentials in my hand luggage for the overnight stop, or I need to collect luggage at LHR and recheck the next morning.

... and be aware of a bit of an increased security risk in having bags stored overnight at airport.

All good, cheers.

To answer your questions and provide some more info, yes its all on the one ticket. Flight from MEL arrives in ADL at 9:05pm and the flight to HKG will depart at 6:25am the next morning. In HKG I have a 2.5 hour transit before heading to CEB the final destination. MEL-ADL-HKG-CEB is all on the one PNR and came up as an option when I did an award search on the QF website for MEL-CEB.

I am hoping to check my luggage all the way through to CEB but bring the clothes and things I need for the overnight in ADL in my carry-on bag.

I don't want to rain on your parade but I'm certain you'll have to collect your bags in ADL after the QF flight due to an overnight break of journey & QF don't store bags overnight.

Even if all the flights are in the same pnr when you checkin at MEL the CSA will only see the MEL/ADL flight as the CX flight ADL/HKG is the next day. It's not always the 24 hour rule if there's an overnight break of journey in Australia you need to pick up your bags that night then checkin again the next morning.

The same thing currently happens for evening departures BNE/SYD with onward connections the next day eg BNE QF x/SYD OZ SEL or BNE QF x/SYD AC YVR. For the purposes of ticketing on an international journey the IATA definition of a stopover is anything over 24 hours however whether your baggage can be checked through is not solely dependent on that rule.

Is it really a big deal if you need to collect your bags in ADL & checkin the next day?

Yeh well is sort of is a big deal because with no bags you could head straight to wherever your headed (a meeting, dinner, coffee, whatever) as opposed to waiting for luggage then having to drop it off somewhere first then having to lug it to the airport again in the early hours of the next morning.

I thought having luggage checked all the way through was one of the benefits of having it all on the same PNR and I thought this was especially likely as CX and QF are in the same alliance.

How disappointing looks like QF have let me down again lol are they the only airline to have this rule of not storing bags overnight ? Probably wouldn't surprise me they're probably the only airline to do a few things that adversely affect their customers for example offering a cafe breakfast in international J lol.

<snip>?

Looks like its a case of YMMV; I have checked in at HBA on first day, with a post midnight flight ex MEL on BA (can't remember the time, but early hours) and it checked through fine. Can't see how they can define an 'overnight break' just because onward flight is the next date - ie you might arrive at 9pm or 11pm and depart at 3am or 5am or 9am. Where would they cut off the check-through?

Nizar, obviously you'll ask and let us know what happened.

Yeh I totally agree - doesn't make alot of sense to me

It's not a calendar day as post midnight is okay as it's being transferred directly to another flight not just sitting around unattended all night when there are no staff there.

It could well be airport specific as MEL doesn't have a curfew like they do in SYD.

I don't know exactly how it's worked out but there must be some kind of parameters programmed into the system as it's not a case of a CSA deciding not to do it - Altea will not display the oncarriage flights so if they're not visible, through checking can't be done.
