This is probably established through an add-on. We could look into it, but implementing new functionality has to be tested against what is already running.

It is worth noting that Flyertalk runs a (heavily modified) version of vBulletin that AFF stopped using around ~2010. AFF now uses completely different software.

I'm used to forums where each post by the original poster, OP, looks slightly different to all the other posts and it is obvious that they are the ones who started the thread. The idea makes sense for short term, one use posts although I'm not sure it's beneficial for things like the Members Chit Chat or the Targeted offers forums which are long term, ongoing threads.

I like the idea of this highlight feature.
 
The original poster is at the top of each page in a thread.
On FT the thread starter is indeed so highlighted at the individual post level ... here chad75 is the OP, his is how they do it on small devices:
