Friday night pondering - how have MH's loads ex-Aus been affected by 370/17 and is there an opportunity for QF to run a daily A330 to KUL?

Onwards connections a problem (either getting agreement from MH or convincing QF pax to fly MJ) but longer term a flight to a Oneworld hub (like DFW, SCL, LHR etc) may prove worthwhile and now may be an opportune time to start (return!) to KUL.

I would think MAS loads KUL to Australia have dropped noticeably. However I do not think it would be wise for Qantas to move too soon on this until it's clear what the Malaysian government have in mind.
Even if the immediate future of MAS becomes more clear I doubt the route will suit Qantas. It's primarily a leisure route without a lot of business passengers plus you are competing against a LCC carrier in Air Asia.
Doubt the dollars will ever stack up.

I know most people don't like flights with stopovers, but EK have DXB-SIN-MEL and DXB-CMB-SIN, maybe QF could start a MEL-KUL-CMB or MEL-KUL-BKK. If UL is considering flying to MEL there must be some demand for that route.

There is a rather large Sri Lankan population in MEL, although most of that would be VFR traffic and not necessarily high yielding.

I think that there is an opportunity in KUL and QF should give it a try. It is a OW hub after all.

Not enough origin/destination traffic I suspect for this to work. And it may well be a oneworld hub, but if people are too scared to fly MH to KUL why would that fear go away if they flew QF to KUL only to connect to an MH flight to somewhere else?

If they did it right, most people wouldn't know it was an MH flight. They'd be on a QF number.

maybe its time to resurrect Red Q,

based in KUL using the idle JQ HK and JQ JP A320s, linked to DXB on 1 end and PER on the other

(or gut 3K and use its metal thats just burning cash...)

go after the premium market and leave the LCC scratchings to Air Asia

That's a PR disaster waiting to happen.
Why? Because many people who fly don't understand what Codeshares are or know how to read "Flight xx_ is operated by carrier YYY"?

People complain about being put onto JQ when they thought they were on a QF flight number, no different here considering recent events.

I think that the EK MEL-SIN-DXB (or MEL-KUL-DXB) flight works because it breaks up the very lengthy MEL-DXB leg. My parents and sister have taken this flight a few times on a MEL-SIN-DXB-DUB and the stop at SIN makes it three rather bearable 7 hour flights rather than doing 14+ hours non stop in Y, something that causes palpitations for me just by typing it out. That said, it seems that EK can make the tag flights to AKL and CHC work, so maybe.

I never quite understood why people don't like transits or tag flights.

I would much rather have 2 x 5 hour flights with an hour on the ground than a single 9 hour flight. I have only lost 2 hours. Not a big deal and my holiday is not going to be any worse because of it.

Not as easy as this, it depends on aircraft type too. If it was 2 5 hour 737 flights or one 9 hour a330 flight which would you choose? Also with EK flights I think I'd prefer the EK 14 hour A380 journey to 14 hours (albeit broken into 2 7 hr sectors) in their 10 abreast 777s.

If it's day flights, no problem. If it's an overnight flight, you can get a decent sleep on a single 9 hour flight. Can't do that on 2 x 5 hour sectors.
