Opinion - hilton hotel - south wharf melb

Was tempted to stay there being a HH member, but opted for the Hilton on the Park.
From what I have seen from the outside, it is a great location if you are going to the Convention centre and from external appearances at least looks ok, and what you generally expect from Hilton in Aus.

I have stayed there now about 9 times and will be back again for two nights this week.
I love the hotel, the rooms are great and well sized and if you get a view up the Yarra, you can watch the light show of the casino.

The staff are mostly good, with a couple of exceptions.
The exec lounge is great and the staff there will really look after you.

Good value for money in Melbourne, and cheap upgrades are available at the desk at check in.

Cheers

Hi Sprucegoose, it is fabulous if you are going to the centre, club is good, however if your business is up the other end, this area can become a bit quiet at night, you may feel left out of it, regards bkkrop

Spent two nights there with SWMBO in September.

Very new nice - normally Jenny prefers older style decor but she liked the room. (Hated the foyer though)

Short walk across footbridge to free city circle tram. A bit further to Southern Cross R/S. Close the the casino if that's your thing.

The exec lounge is a bit like a QP; it's on a lower floor, leaving the rooms with high views to guests.

I agree with IainF and serfty.

A good hotel in a good location. As a HH Gold we were upgraded to a Relaxation Suite on one occasion and we almost got lost in the maze. Exec lounge is good with plenty of suitable food and the staff very helpful.

The only down side we had was a fire alarm at 0230 one morning :!: (set off by some idiot manually operating an alarm)

My husband and I have just returned from 4 nights at the Hilton South Wharf. We choose it as we got a very good rate of A$228 per night including breakfast.
Points in favour
v Good price when we booked
v Close to Melbourne Convention Centre and the new DFO store.
v The room was a decent size; 38 sq. m.
v We asked for two single doonas on our king sized bed plus rubber pillows. Both were already in the room when we arrived.
Point against
v We had a west facing room which was very hot when we arrived as the blinds were up and the sun was streaming in. We had to remember to fully close the blinds when we went out each day.
v Not near anything else but DFO and Melbourne Convention Centre.
v Very gloomy room. Only one downlight for the whole room. There were a couple of low wattage lights we subsequently discovered. We asked for an extra light but no luck.
v The most appalling art work imaginable at the check-in counter. It looked like a bacterial growth and was made of two colours of “Brillo” pads. It was meant to signify coral.
v Corridors also gloomy especially at night.
v Poor cleaning standard on the whole length of the corridor on level 15 on Saturday and Sunday morning.
v Breakfast was a little unimaginative.
We will be extremely unlikely to opt to stay there again.

We thought the art work at the check-in counter was great. :D

I guess we are all different. ;)

I'm ambivalent about the 'brillo' display; as posted +1 hated it. (Then again she thought the strainer/steamer sphere sculpture at the South end of the Brisbane Mall 'disgusting' as well)

So score 3 against, two for and one abstaining for the Brillo Coral.

As the hotel staff pointed out, it gets a lot of comments.

Just maybe not as many +ve as they had hoped.

Let's make that score 3 - 3, Serfty. I thought the Brillo sculpture was brilliant.

Make that 4-3 in favour of the sculpture.

The hotel is very well themed - fittings, uniforms, rooms etc. It may not be everyone's cup of tea (and it shows very well) but it leaves the other two Hiltons in MEL left for dead, at least character wise.

MEL Hilton on the Park has the grandeur for sure but it seems more out of town than South Wharf (unless, as said, your business is located on that side of the city), plus the rooms are pretty dull.

I do agree that the lighting in the rooms (South Wharf) are rather low, making the room very dark at night. Seems to be some sort of theme for new (esp. "hip" or boutique) hotels these days.

I stayed at South Wharf during Anzac weekend this year, which was the first genuinely busy weekend that the hotel experienced since opening (i.e. first real challenge for them). They did extremely well; I would very much like to stay with them again so I'm hoping that standards haven't dropped off markedly since then.

I am another +1 for the scuplture.
I will be at South Wharf tonight for the next 2 nights if anyone is around.
Can possibly guest for the exec lounge.
Cheers
