Interested to hear about experiences in OpenJaw pricing.

Priced a J UAL PEK-SFO//SFO-SYD.

As an open jaw = $7000
As 2 one-ways $13000

It's often the case that round-trips or open jaws will be much cheaper. Plenty of examples in Europe... one way AMS-BER was €450+, return was €130. Just a couple of days ago a friend was flying LHR-HEL then HEL-DUB. Two one ways cost them nearly AUD1200 (non-stops on AY each leg). An open jaw on AY was AUD302. Expensive mistake for them.

What's the rationale for an airline pricing an openjaw like that. I understand why they would do it for a return.

At least for some open jaws you are locked in, full one ways are often flexible or changeable (with the usual exceptins where some legacy carriers have gone to one-way pricing to compete against LCCs).

Some open jaws can be quite expensive. Pricing would depend on route.

Airlines really need to start offering reasonable one-way airfares.

Yes I agree. The LCC like Nostar do.
I suppose OJ ties the customer to 2 flights.

In my case it's not too bad because the second leg SFO-SYD may need to change from January to February.

I'm looking at:
23Dec PEK-SFO
14Jan SFO-SYD or 14Feb SFO-SYD
I'll try to see if I can get a U award for the Feb possibility

Sometimes they are great, sometimes not. I wonder if the airline has something to do with it. Some European airlines I've flown with have had very reasonable open jaws. SQ on the other hand does not seem to like open jaws one little bit, to the point that it's often cheaper to book two RETURN fares over an open jaw, even if the jaw is just between MEL and SYD.

I have certainly also found that open jaw pricing can be substantially cheaper intra-Europe. I got some good value J open jaw flights with KLM earlier this year.

Depends on the airline, but many will give return ticket pricing on open jaws where the two "open" cities are in the same general region.
e.g. Qantas gives return pricing on an open jaw between Australia and any of its North American destinations (LAX, SFO, DFW, JFK, YVR) even when there are connecting flights to domestic Australian and/or North American destinations and even when it's a double open jaw (so long as start and end are somewhere in Australia).

UA J open jaw
Dec 23 PEK-SFO
Jan 29 SFO-SYD

$780 cheaper than PEK-SFO one way

What’s to stop people paying for an open jaw when they actually want to only go the SFO.

I've booked many flights starting and finishing SYD and MEL respectively with SIA, and in fact many destinations across the SIA network, no problems. Sometimes prices are even cheaper.
