Op Ups in AA v QF for Elite Status Members

It is for this reason that I never ask for upgrades at the counter!!!!

I never expect one. The emotional investment is too high. If it happens, then it's a nice bonus. Otherwise i'd just end up bitter if i keep checking Sabre for loadings, endlessly speculating etc. That said my parents and I did have fun watching the upgrade list at the gate when we were in the US, betting each other on whether the next person would clear the list.

I actually heard, according to an industry source, that CX hates AAdvantage elites as we apparently have much more of a tendency to ask for op ups at the check in counter than other OW elites. I blame this on the 'upgrade entitlement culture' that's prevalent amongst LOFTAP pax. This I heard from a CX source but I wouldn't be surprised if the other airlines feel the same way. Apparently if you ask for an op up at check in or at the gate, the CX agents will manually tweak the computer generated priority list and bump you all the way to the bottom!
But in 2 years, approx 10 CX paid sectors, mrsdrron and I have been upgraded J-F on 3 occasions-a pretty good batting average. Then again I have never asked for an upgrade.

Deservedly so :p

And I bet that is a better batting average than you received on QF flights. I think of all my CX flights where I had not purchased a ticket in the highest cabin, I have not been upgraded on only two occasions - once on an economy award ticket and once in J from LAX to HKG. I have NEVER been operationally upgraded from J to F on any Qantas, AA or BA flight. I have had 4 operational upgrades from Y to J on QF international flights over about 12 years of top tier status.

Yes Sunday was my first ever op up on QF.The only International op up J-F on AA was before I had any status with AA and both mrsdrron and I were on award tickets-forunately she got the upgrade as well.

They only hate people who ask for upgrades, ie 90% of AAdvantage peeps ('merkins I'm suspecting). The computer generated list would put AAdvantage elites at the top along with other elites. But once a 'merkin asks for an upgrade, s/he will be shoved to the bottom.

That would explain why i get a few upgrades maybe, then i dont ask, just be nice and sometimes your lucky.

Finally something I can top you on ;) I have been upped from J to F on BA for two pax on an award ticket. Of coure mrssimongr had to fake an illness (and spend 2 hours in hospital to make it look convincing) and spend a night in a hotel and 7 hours at the airport but we were in F at the end of it ;)

I have had no op-ups J->F on AA or QF - although I think all but 1 of my AA flights I have been in the highest cabin.

I would not expect to see any op-ups whY to F on AA due to the free upgrade for EXP and the stickers. I have never seen a less than full F cabin.

I have had a notional op-up on CX flying in the F cabin with J service and a real up to F on on KA.

Happy to pass if those are the requirements ;)

Same here. I can only recall one AA flight where I was not booked into the highest cabin - either through paid fare or using an eVIP.

I have never asked for an upgrade at the check-in counter not even jokingly. I do not believe in the mentality 'you will never know if you don't ask'. If I have paid for a WHY seat then WHY it shall be unless I am given a complimentary upgrade for whatever reason....
