Hi,

I am early in my points earning with around 200k in VA and around 100k in qff and trying to work out which path is best to take as my goal is a rtw business trip for myself, wife and daughter. I have only silver va status and no qantas status anymore.

With the cost of kris flyers redemption from va is it worth just aligning myself to qff, is it easier to lock in a Oneworld rtw business as opposed to a star alliance. I’ve read the guides but some of the comments around star alliance rtw booking made it sound very difficult, in addition the points cost would be much higher as I would be transferring from va. I am not too concerned with other redemption but this seems the only likely way I could take my family on a business rtw trip and would be a fun goal to plan. my analysis of the two types of rtw redemptions has justconfused me in the end.

I’m leaning toward giving up the va route and aligning to qantas and saving those points in case something comes up in the future. Do you need status for these awards?

Thanks.

Can’t comment on which is better but the oneworld award is NOT rtw. You don’t have to circumnavigate the globe.

Both have their merits. As you say, booking with KrisFlyer miles would be more expensive if transferring points over from VA (although the award costs fewer miles in real terms). With KrisFlyer you get 7 stopovers (rather than 5 with QF) but QF does allow backtracking.

Probably for me it would come down to which alliance (oneworld or Star) had better award availability for on the routes you want to book.
