Hi there

Are you aware of any cheaper alternatives to "mileage run" fares such as OneWorld Explorer which is slightly more than $10k in business class? 8)

Well, there are always Circle Pacific fares...or for true mileage runs, check out StevePER's Status Chaser calculator (both sites found on The Ultimate Qantas Guide)

Thanks Lindsay. Circle Pacific sounds tempting :p I've done heaps of travel during the last qualifying period, will do heaps next year but due to job change and associated activities I try to limit travel for a while... a good US/Europe/Asia "run" at the end of the year should be sufficient for status maintenance :D

Start from places in Asia where the base fares are cheaper. e.g. A DONE4 ex BKK is AUD7,600+t/c/l, ex CMB is AUD6,850 +t/c/l. Compare this to ex Oz where the fare is AUD9,610+t/c/l. You can travel to BKK for about AUD1,200 and CMB for AUD1,500 (return inc. t/c/l) (An return award to BKK is 60,000 + about AUD140 t/c/l).

There is plenty of information on the FlyerTalk oneWORLD Forum.

I did a DONE3 from KUL last month. Cost was MYR 19233 which converted to about A$6682 so not too bad value. It was an e-ticket issued by QF even though there was no QF flights in the itinerary. The J fare up to KUL and back actually cost more than A$1000 more than the DONE3 fare!

What's the easiest way to go about purchasing a OWE ticket overseas?

In particular, from Colombo.

Thanks

My DONE3 from KUL was booked and ticketed by our Australian corporate travel agent. There is no DONE3 price ex-Australia, so the price is calculated as a Malaysian price converted to AUD.

Of course, there's not much point in buying a DONE4 out of Asia if you're going to pay for a return trip from Oz. So there's a saving right there in buying a DONE3.

Perhaps a better way of doing it might be to buy a single to BKK (or CMB or wherever), collect your DONE4 with flights booked all the way back to Australia and on to BKK, but leave the last flight or two from Oz to BKK open-dated. That way you can fly RTW from BKK and home to SYD (or wherever) and so long as you travel again within 12 months, you can use those remaining segments to fly to BKK and collect the next set of tickets. Keep doing this as long as it's worth doing.
