Oneworld Circle Pacific Question..

Would pick AKL if using the fare as a cheaper AUS-US-AUS business class option and no other stops on the way to US via Asia were min 24 hrs.

And while I'm on the topic a question - what has a better J class service - MEL-NRT(QF) and NRT-DFW (AA) OR MEL-HKG-YVR (CX) and YVR-DFW (AA).

thanks,

If it fits into the mileage, I would choose somewhere like SFO or SAN as being much interesting places to spend a day. YMMV.

Also, what/where is SAN?

How do you define service? How long is a piece of string?

Some things to consider:
  • QF179 MEL-NRT only operates a few days a week. Its an A330-300 so skybeds and expect typical QF business class service (i.e. quite good). But if going on other days, you may end up routing via CNS or BNE and getting 767-300 or JAL 747-400 aircraft with seating of lesser comfort.
  • MEL-HKG-YVR on CX means taking CX134/CX838 or CX104/CX836 combos. Both MEL-HKG will be scheduled for 3-class A330-300 aircraft so should have long-haul seats similar to QF skybeds. However, occasionally these sub for 2-class regional. This is unlikely and I would not re-route just on this very slight possibility. The CX104/CX836 combo means a late night transit in HKG, while the CX134/CX888 is in my opinion better timing but requires an early start in MEL. Typical CX long-haul J service is good.
  • If using QF FF program, CX flights do not earn status bonus points. Nothing to do with service, but may be important. I expect you can use AA codeshare for HKG-YVR.
Now for me, I would take the QF/AA combo and use an e-vip to upgrade to AA F for the trans-Pac flight.

San Diego, of course.

Thank you and apologies for the SAN question!

One further question - when flying from SFO to JFK in First Class [767 300] what will the seat and service be like?

Looking at 8:05am departure from SFO into JFK at 4:45pm. Will this be a flat bed seat?

thanks

Note that AA operates a combination of 3-class and 2-class services between SFO and JFK. So if using a DCIRxx fare, on a 3-class flight you end up in business class and not first class as you would if it was a 2-class service.

The 767-300 aircraft are two class, while the 767-200 are 3-class.

First class on a 767-300 is likley to be their Next Generation Business Class, which is also used for international business class (same aircraft and cabin, just called F for domestic and J for international). Seat is flat but sloping in a 2x2x2 config. These get typical domestic F service.

First class on 767-200 is an older style. They have deep recline, but not flat, in a 2x1x2 config. These get the Flagship Service, which is very nice including ice cream sundae.

thank you/

One more and I promise the last question for today.

What is AA business class from NRT to DFW like in terms of service/flat bed seat etc.

thanks again

Unless it has changed recently (or it is hidden from the OW timetable) AA don't codeshare HKG-YVR or HKG-YYZ, only to US destinations (SFO, LAX & JFK). This includes CX888/AA6124 to JFK that operates via YVR, does not list AA6124 when completing journey at YVR.

Ahh, I thought that may be the case, hence my non-committal wording ;) . I have used AA codeshare on HKG-LAX for the purpose of earning the QF status bonus.

AA are in the process of rolling out the new business class product across their 767-300 and 777 fleet. The NRT-DFW will be 777. There is no guarantee what type of config it will be. Their old business class seats have very large pitch but do not recline flat. Their new business class seats recline flat but not horizontal.

You will get Bose NC headphones to use. The old business class will have the loop IFE system while the new business class they will hand out potable AVOD players. Food it quite reasonable for airline J food.

Just to clarify, is the status bonus multiplied to points earned on QF, AA and BA flights irrespective of whether they are codeshare or not?

Correct. All depends on the flight number on the ticket.

Yeah I've done the same HKG-JFK and HKG-SFO using the AA codeshare for the bonus. Would like to see YVR, so maybe next time (if there is one) I might sacrifice the few extra QF points and route via there.
