Step 1: find the airline's earning table on the QFF website
here.
Step 2: if you're flying in a FF earning class, the next step is to find out the distance between the two cities using a tool like
great circle mapper. Once you know the distance you refer back to website's earning table in step one to determine how many FF points you'll earn depending on the fare bucket.
Step 3: then use the QF status credit earning table
here to determine how many status credits you'll earn.
So in you're example, Washington (DCA or IAD) to Chicago (ORD) is either 612 miles (DCA) or 589 miles (IAD). (I'm not sure where you get 1702 miles from.) The deep discount Economy fares on AA don't earn anything with AA so you first need to make sure you're in a fare earning class.
