Hi all,

I'm getting very close with booking my itinerary for my RTW trip using the oneworld planning tool. Thus far my Intinerary is as such:

SYD-LAX-SFO-JFK-LHR-mad-EAS-mad-TRN//CDG-SYD

My first issue is that it the tool is telling my I have too many sectors, I imagine i've overdone the Europe number. Can anyone help me work around this? Bearing in mind the EAS to TRN is a leg I really would like to do?

My second issue is that I can't seem to get the flight from CDG to SYD to match up with my partners flight who will be in Paris at the time in the OW booking tool? On the 2/10/10 I need to get the BA327 from CDG-LHR and the BA9 from LHR-SYD. yet these flights do not come up in the booking tool?

Your help would be much appreicated.

SM

You're only allowed 4 sectors in Europe, including any overland, so as you suspected, you're over.

I suggest:

... JFK-MAD-EAS-MAD-TRN//CDG

As to your CDG-LHR-SYD, it means you'll have to lose another intra-European leg... One option is to buy CDG-LHR separately, so your routing becomes:

... JFK-MAD-EAS-MAD-TRN//LHR

Maybe you'd too many intra-Europe flights for CDG-LHR to show up...? Maybe it's already sold out in your fare class? I'm not sure about this one, I don't have the tools to look up availability.

You can also max out your intra-US sectors to earn more miles/status. Not sure if you're keen on that.

Others more clever than me may have better suggestions...

Out of interest, what cabin are you flying in? Looking simply at the planning tool, both BA327 and BA9 are coming up as flight options for me, but when using the booking tool, it may be a different story based on L or D availability.

With respect to the segments within Europe, the surface segment (TRN-CDG) does not count towards the continent total, but the CDG-LHR segment will, bringing the count to 5, where 4 is the free maximum. You could simply pay for the extra segment within Europe given you are well under the 16 segment maximum. I doubt you could purchase the extra segment on-line.

Thanks Hawkeye,

I will be flying Economy, so not sure why the requested flights CDG-SYD are not coming up?

What does an extra segment cost, given it is an Economy fare?

Also is it possible to upgrade to business class using points on my leg from SYD-LAX?

Thanks again

SM

Ok, I am able to get both flights to appear with L class availability using the booking engine. Having a peek at Expertflyer, BA327 availability is wide-open, but is showing L1 currently for BA9.

As far as I recall, an extra economy segment is $200AU, but you may wish to verify with the Oneworld website.

As far as upgrading the SYD-LAX, you can apply for a upgrade using Qantas points as long as you are on the QF flight number.

Thanks Hawkeye,

I understand that if i book using the AA RTW desk I will save $$$ as per my last RTW in 2006. Although i hear that AA will only book you on an AA flight no's if they can. Given that the SYD-LAX flight is Qantas metal will I still get to request an upgrade with my Qantas points? Can i persuade AA RTW desk to book SYD-LAX as a QAN flight no?

Not correct.

You are allowed up to 4 flight segments in Europe, Asia, SWP, Africa and South America and up to 6 flight segments in North America..

(over)land segments count against the 16 in total but not against the continental limits.

You may save money due to AA only charging fuel fines on their own flight numbers while QF charge for any segment that have a fuel fine for whether they market it or not.

AA like to have at least one intercontinental segment with an AA flight number; transatlantic works ok for this if they insist (of course, then you'll pay the fuel fine for that segment). You should be able to book SYD-LAX on QF flight number and metal. Once done, you can waitlist for a QFF points upgrade.

FWIW, it would also be possible to upgrade the AA transatlantic using SWU or Advantage points & Co-pay.

Ahh OK, I stand corrected. Didn't know about the not counting towards flight segments but counting towards total segments.

Thanks Serfty,

So given the below itinerary, will I be up for an extra $200 for the additional euro sector? My read of the below is I have below 4 in euope given the text in lower case are connectors?

SYD-LAX-SFO-JFK-LHR-mad-EAS-mad-TRN//CDG-lhr-SYD

I will book through the AA desk and seek to get a QAN flight number for SYD-LAX. I will also book the JFK-LHR on an AA flight number to appease the intercontinental requirement AA have.

On my original request to get CDG-SYD on the following flights and dates (02/10/10 - BA327 from CDG-LHR & BA9 from LHR-SYD), I imagine i will need to book this asap as Hawkeye said there is only 1 "L" class seat left on the BA9?
Cheers

Unfortunately, the transits still count towards the sector total - it is a limitation of the hub model that airlines use. Therefore, your flight segments in Europe are:

LHR-MAD
MAD-EAS
EAS-MAD
MAD-TRN
CDG-LHR

You should be able to get the itinerary booked and held, and pay (and ticket) later

You could take the train in one direct between Madrid and San sebastion. It can be done in about 6 hours. Saving one segment

Chazmen, what site r u using to book a TW using AA portal - going to be doing a similar trip next year and looking for any savings. Thanks.

Jetlagged,

I rang the AA RTW desk in the USA on +1 800 247 3247 last night and booked in my trip.

All for this below LONE4 itinerary does the price of A$4429.60 sound right, bearing in mind an extra segment in Europe?
SYD-LAX-SFO-JFK-LHR-mad-EAS-mad-TRN//CDG-lhr-SYD
I understand from the help desk that the price has a A$3699 base fare + USD150 for extra segment and ~A$550 in taxes.

Also do i call AA Australia on +61 733296060 to pay if the above is correct?

Thanks

SM

As per my original post, I think you can fly direct from JFK to MAD on Iberia, so saving you the cost of the extra leg, unless you want to stop in London before you head to MAD...

Did the AA RTW desk force you to take a trans-continent flight with an AA number? Specifically, does SYD-LAX (your first leg) need to be an AA number?

Leumas,

Need to stop in London unfortunately. The AA RTW desk rep that I got was great and let me book SYD-LAX on a QF flight number. As a result I took AA flights across the US and to LHR.

Guys,

Also one other question in addition to the price query above.....I have got the flight BA327 on the 02/10/10 from CDG-LHR with my partner but have been told the connecting BA9 flight from LHR-SYD is booked out (and waitlist closed), so they have put me on QF 2. Is there anyway I can possibly get onto BA9?

Failing that, given my partner bought the BA327/BA9 flight home as part of a discount fare, could she transfer to my flight? and if so what sort of penalties are we looking at?

SM

You need to find L class for your LONE4.

If there is no L availability on BA9, you could check the Qantas codeshare for this flight, QF302.
