Onite got a Red-e-mail offering a One way only disc from SYDMEL for travel 29-31Dec. When I jumped on the website this morning there is also a FF offer for the same period 45% off..by clicking thru the link on the home page the offer is either 4,400 pts plus $47 taxes .fines etc or under 8,000 points no more to pay one way
I remember seeing this sort of thing (cheaper fares anyway)over the AFL Grand Final period when extra flights were put on to bring footy fans over to MEL

SYD-MEL is a big business route.

A lot of business wind down over Christmas/New Year. Holiday makers make up for some of the slack on the 24th/26th/27th etc, but by the end of December things get quiet.

The interesting thing is that the special is only in one direction, whihc suggests something other than a wind down of business. Perhaps Melbournians like spending New Year in Sydney, which keeps prices higher in that direction?

Interesting; $89 / 4400 pt +++/ 7875pt Syd-Mel on most flights during that period (T9 X9 is the rule, not the exception). Getting there is extremelydifferent, no award flight MEL-SYD on any day; cheapest flights are 2 @ $125 late NYE; a few at $145/$165 and the remaining 120 odd flights are from $240.

Right so they have fullish a/c one way and empty the other way. Not rocket science to expect a sale of some sorts to help fill the a/c.

Anyone game to try and book this with connecting flights, even though QANTAS says you can't do it with this code?

It goes through QFF Award booking alright:

Here's a quick booking that I tried to whip up:

Not bad for 45% off, if you want to do some quick jetsetting. Shame about the taxes though, but at least you can get that discounted as well...

13,200 + $212 taxes
20,350 + no taxes (rather than 37,000) ...

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

It would be good if it worked with a connecting flight from Perth :)

Try it and see how you go. PER-SYD-MEL should work, if you can get it on those days.

I did try something similar and received a confirmation (SYD-CBR-MEL). However it was not ticketed; and they rang me three day later to advise the promotion is ONLY available for non-connecting flights (cf |SYD-MEL| only). They offered me a direct flight instead.

^ Connecting flights NOT permitted. Offer is valid one-way Sydney to Melbourne only for travel on 29, 30 or 31 December 2006.

I declined the offer of re-booking and had it canceled (at no cost).

I imagine getting availability on the PER->SYD sector may be a little difficult.

Obviously the booking engine invokes the normal rules of the connecting flight being discounted as well. Maybe the exceptions are few and far enough between they just do it manually.

This special has nothing to do with quiet time for business travel but all to do with the Ashes, all the poms/aussies etc flying up for the Sydney Test on the 1st Jan.

Yep, for example, Qantas has scheduled an additional 6 flights MEL-SYD on Sunday 31st; three of which are being operated by 743's.

It's what the industry callls "Backfilling" ...
