Hi there y'all

I was just having an educated discussion about why Qantas over Virgin. I said VB (who I still adore with a passion) was sitting around 75%, and Qantas was over 80%, and given how time sensitive our trips are, we should therefore focus on Qantas.

I was scoffed at. (I love the word scoff, just a FYI).

I was asked to "prove it." This is what I found from the most recent OTP.

Of the major domestic airlines, Qantas achieved the highest level of on time departures for February 2011 at 82.9 per cent, followed by Jetstar at 74.2 per cent, Virgin Blue at 71.8 per cent and Tiger Airways at 61.9 per cent. The regional airlines were led by Skywest at 83.4 per cent, followed by Regional Express at 81.2 per cent and QantasLink at 78.1 per cent.

Qantas also achieved the highest on time arrivals among the major domestic airlines at 81.1 per cent, followed by Jetstar at 73.6 per cent, Virgin Blue at 69.4 per cent and Tiger Airways at 62.1 per cent. Skywest was the best performing regional airline for on time arrivals at 84.2 per cent, followed by QantasLink at 73.3 per cent and Regional Express also at 73.3 per cent.

Holy moly! I knew VB was getting bad, that is just worrying. I think the fact that if you click on their page which takes you to their on time performance, it just takes you back to their home page.

You can read the full report here.

On Time flights are not something frequent flyers are used to and most of us I suspect understand delays occur, I would be more worried about the cancellations which is interestingly a different story with QF and DJ above the average and QF Link getting the winners trophy, before it was cancelled due to a lack of funds.

I think you also need to average out the seasons and their events, be it summer storms or cyclones etc, the last full year is a better example:

Of the major domestic airlines, Qantas achieved the highest level of on time departures for
2010 at 85.6 per cent, followed by Virgin Blue at 83.0 per cent, Jetstar at 80.7 per cent and
Tiger Airways at 71.7 per cent. The regional airlines were led by Regional Express at 87.5 per
cent, Skywest at 86.6 per cent and QantasLink at 81.3 per cent.

I think you also need to average out the seasons and their events, be it summer storms or cyclones etc, the last full year is a better example:

Also need to look at where the airlines fly. For example as DOTARS says in the link provided in the OP "On time performance and cancellations in February 2011 were affected by extreme weather conditions particularly in Queensland and along the East Coast. Cairns, Hamilton Island, Proserpine and Townsville Airports were closed for some time due to cyclone Yasi". Qantas has handed over much of the flying on these routes to Jetstar.

You can also look at the airline performances on individual routes by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page the OP links to.

There are statistics and there are lies.

The statistics published about On Time performance don't mean much to me. I am more interested in my own On Time performance and over the last 3 years it is <50% which is not good.

That being said on the weekend I had 2 DJ flights and both arrived On Time if not earlier although both left late.

Given the last three times I flew my beloved VB we were late (very), I am hesitant to try and make it work. 20 mins here, 40 mins there - it all adds up.
