On-line check-in for QF International

I can confirm both the 4 hr check in for bags for US flights, and the anytime check in for carry on only flights.

As an aside - I notice that since the grounding - all LAX T4 (and I assume TBIT) QF flights can be checked in from 2pm onwards :)

The last time I passed through TBIT was in March 2011. I seem to recall that check-in opened quite early (perhaps 14:00) for QF flights there.

My mistake - perhaps it has been going for longer......

I usually just transit through LAX. It's been a few years since I actually checked in there.

At last an advantage for regional flyers. On-line checkin, tag bags at regional thru international, land at T2, walk to T3, catch bus to T1, up stairs, left to immigration & straight to a lounge 4 to 6 hours before flight. I think I'll be giving it a real nudge later this year as I'll be trying for 8 hours.

Yep, living in MEL I know what if feels to be a "regional" flyer with Qantas :p

Just thought I would update you all about what eventuated. Did online check-in, arrived at F desk in SYD 4 1/2 hours prior to departure. Agent advised that the flight opened for bags 4 hours before but that he would take my case behind the desk and have the First Hosts deliver the baggage tags to the Flounge :)
Through immigration and security as fast as Ryan Bingham and arrived at the Flounge 5 minutes later :D
Thanks again to everyone for all the helpful responses

Would anybody know what time BA F check in opens in SYD? Is it 3 hrs or could I get in earlier? Don't really fancy sitting there for an hour. Got booked on QF319. From memory BA check in is outsourced staff (last time they asked me if I could get into a lounge with my Platinum card...)

This is done by Menzies, the people with the navy blue jackets and red ties. They will generally only open when required to do so.

Darn, cut in Flounge time :D well can take it easy then and not rush to the airport.

Oh? I thought flights open 3 hours prior to departure... Is it 4 now?

BA?? 3 Hours ...
I would assume that checking in at MEL (domestic; international connections) for a BA flight out of SYD would result in sufficient interlining and BP's being issued to ensure I can just wing it to the F lounge without needing to go near a desk? This should result in a nice little marination of my liver prior to boarding my BloodyAwful flight to LHR ;)

Up thread kpc posted that he was advised check in opens at 4 hours for flights to UK/US. When I fronted up to the First check-in they were pretty definite about luggage being accepted from 4 hours prior to departure

Yes that is my experience.......on all counts!!!!

I would think that internationally even the lounge would want to see an actual boarding pass. There's also a small issue with clearing outwards customs who would also need to see a boarding pass.

Just another example that highlights why checkin (as well as other aspects of airline operations) are best kept in house as a huge majority of staff who work for contractors have very little experience as demonstrated by the comments above. These contractors are a customer's first impression of the airline, in this case BA which reflects badly on them.

I've been able to check in my luggage more than 3 hours before the flight on CX in HKG, but I'd assume that it was only because it's CX's home airport. Does anyone know if the same is extended to QF passengers in HKG? I'm flying back from HKG on QF in J in December and wondered whether I could check in my luggage early if I OLCI 24 hours beforehand and aim to arrive at the airport around 5 hours early? I'm planning to catch a local bus so not able to do in-town check in at the Airport Express station.

Have never done this before :I am wondering if I check-in on-line, don't have any bags can I turn up to SYD ( and F Lounge) any time I like prior to departure of my flight?
Have turned up with bags more than 3 hours before and the F check-in desk wouldn't accept them. I'll be transferring from T2 around 4 1/2 hours prior to QF dep.
There appears to be next to no info on Qantas.com regarding this.
If it is possible then I'm going to try my best to travel carry-on.

You can do it but I would offer one word of caution. I did this when flying PVG-SYD. I was placed in the very back row of the plane, right next to the toilet/galley (I stupidly didn't look at my BP properly until boarding). Now I don't have any status but I did check in almost 22 hours before take off. I thought this alone (and the fact that I am saving them time/staff effort at the airport) would garner me a spot closer to the front of the plane.
I inquired with Qantas.com feedback afterwards why I was penalised in this way but never received any response...
