Have never done this before :I am wondering if I check-in on-line, don't have any bags can I turn up to SYD ( and F Lounge) any time I like prior to departure of my flight?
Have turned up with bags more than 3 hours before and the F check-in desk wouldn't accept them. I'll be transferring from T2 around 4 1/2 hours prior to QF dep.
There appears to be next to no info on Qantas.com regarding this.
If it is possible then I'm going to try my best to travel carry-on.

I believe so - might be a short hold up at immigration while they 'open' your flight if you're the first to arrive, but otherwise I believe it's fine. Enjoy! :)

From my memory I have tried to check in for international flights but they need to check passports and also give you immigration documents.

IMHO I don't believe you can due to the above reasons.

Never been a problem for me; if you can't find an open desk, they can verify your passport in the Lounge. ;)

I have done that at Melbourne before. Never tried it at Sydney but I would assume it would be the same. As mentioned before if you are the very first passenger to go through immigration often the flight will not be open. So there might be an extra minute or two delay while they open the flight when you go through customs.

Also I think you don't need to online check in for this to work either. As long as you don't have any bags to check in it is possible to check in, in person at any open Qantas check in desk up to 24 hours before the flight.

Yes you can obtain your intl OLCI boarding pass & print out at home which will get you through customs at SYD Intl to the lounge.

Just see someone in the lounge so they can verify your passport & visa (if applicable) is valid. Until this is done your name will be on the 'ineligible to board' list so if you didn't approach anybody in the lounge you would get the 'beep' at the boarding gate as you would have a comment next to your name "check passport & visas".

Once staff have verified your docs & acknowledged the comment it will be deleted. For people will nil lounge access, staff at the gate can sort this out if required.

Which unfortunatly is very subject to agent discretion.

Thankyou for all the helpful responses folks :)
At this stage I still don't know if I'll be able to fit everything into carry-on.
Also have a points upgrade to F thrown into the mix, but if that doesn't eventuate then I will probably try very hard to make everything fit. I don't want to wait yet again in the food court at T1 as QF won't accept my suitcase more than 3 hours before.
It would be good if OT interlined baggage with QF, I live in hope ;)

QF definitely have an interline agreement from QF to OT eg BNE QF xSYD OT DGE, however it's possible that OT employees at NTL may only be used to checking in bags domestically & international connections may fall into the 'too hard basket'.

If you were cruising by NTL Airport & it's not too far out of your way you could pop in & ask an OT person what the procedure is for transferring bags onto intl flights.

Bear in mind too that depending on what checkin system they use, while it may not be possible for them to generate QF boarding passes, in theory they should be able to tag the bag thru to a QF intl flight assuming they use the normal thermal bag tags. If they do I would still ask in the Flounge if the OT bag tag number & weight generated across to Altea so they can update the system if required.

If their operation in NTL is manual & OT only use a hand written bag tag you would need to recheck you bags at SYD Intl to get a proper thermal bag tag.

Hmm...I'm on QF31 to LHR tomorrow and was planning to checkin at T-3.5 hours or so. I'm sure the F Syd desk has accepted my checked bags prior the 3 hour mark in the past but it seems from the above, they won't! :(. Oh well, I guess I'll find out tomorrow...

They sometimes, indeed, often, do so; but other times they won't. YMMV

I have checked in more then 3 hours before departure only 2 weeks ago, was close to 3,5, no problem they said.

I checked in at around T-3.5 hours at MEL F last year and they were happy to do it if I was happy to have my luggage 'sitting around' at the F check in suite for 30 mins or so (meaning, I think, they could check me in at that time, but my luggage processing had to wait until T-3 hours). I was. :)

Ok.....posting from the F lounge. Checked in at T-3.5 hours. on the wait list for a massage :( Lounge is packed; also waiting for a table for lunch / snack :(. I asked at the Syd F check in. If you have luggage to check in, for long haul flights eg US, UK, they can check you in at T-4 hours, otherwise they can't. All other flights, can only check you in at T-3 hours. If you don't have checked luggage, they can override the system, and can check you in whatever time you turn up. The guy was a bit puzzled as to why one would want to spend more than 4 hours at the F lounge!!!

You can have the Salt 'n Pepper Squid¹, but I may dent the Tatt's inventory on Saturday ... :p

¹ I used to love it, but I had a serve in Sydney that was 'off' a couple of years ago; I have not had it since
