On board recognition - who gets any?

Traveled BNE - AKL a week ago, nice welcome with a bottle of water and an entry card for NZ before takeoff. Great crew on the flight NZ based by the looks of things.

Flew back in Y SYD-PER today. Was offered a "left over" newspaper from J before other passengers which was nice. First time this has happened in months!

My last couple of domestic flights have had welcomes and once a newspaper.

I like to wear crocs when travelling (go ahead, judge me) and I dress simply (Im not talking bali return tourist, just neat and comfy) so the last FA took one look at me and was ready to send me on my way to the rear and then I heard, "Oh. Oh. Oh, Good morning. Your seat is right here" as she points to J. I guess I bring the tone of the entire cabin down with my bogan ways.

Our last Syd>Auckland flight, the FA was very attentive and welcoming to the point that I told hubby that she was his new girlfriend by all the attention. (She was lovely but we are low maintenance flyers).

On my last few VA ATR flights I have been offerred and juice or water before takeoff and addressed by name during the snack service.

A few others were treated the same in rows 17 and 16 - notably awkward for those nearby not treated in the same manner. haha

Am WP for Velocity.

Flew VA1 recently, seated in emergency exit row. CSM came and introduced herself just after take off, took my food order before the rest of the cabin, delivered my food before the rest of the cabin, removed my food tray before the rest of the cabin, asked how the flight was etc. towards the end of the flight, addressed me by name all flight long. Was fantastic recognition.

Unfortunately it was short lived, have done multiple US trips since in higher cabin classes and received no personalized attention. Maybe I should fly economy more often for ego stroking purposes haha (or not, I find the additional attention embarrassing at times).

Flown BNE to LAX several times this year, and only once had them come and take a food order in advance and thank me for flying with them. On domestic flights I haven't seen actual recognition except a Welcome Back as I board in more than a year.

If there is a procedure for this I would say it is implemented in a patchy way.

I suspect the number of Plats and Golds may be increasing so they can't be as personal? I remember them sitting with the Plat's in the past and chatting. Not anymore.

I get the occasional welcome back Mr Stubbings at which I turn around and look for my dad, but other than that I have been offered a newspaper and water twice - once coming back from Fiji and once coming back from Brisbane. Agree with drewbles - I don't expect to have the crew to go gooey over me, but the occasional recognition does make you feel nice when it occurs. Now if only I could score an op up that would be good!!

As a WP, this has been my experience as well. Few in Y and then Y+ on the return. Y was great, CSM introduced him self. Offered me drinks, food etc. Y+ CSM introduced him self, noticed i was on a bulk head and tried to move me, commented at least the seat next to you is free (until another cabin crew moved his friend into the seat next to me).

However on all my trips in J, nothing.

My treatment as WP on airnz is much better even in J. My one trip in Y the CSM introduced him self, asked how everything was. Then proceeded to get me scotch and champagne from J and instructed the rest of the crew to use that for me and my travel partner. Even in J they make an effort to introduce them selves, and have a chat and check in on you.

Don't know why a partner airline can make more of an effort than virgin.

Essentially it's because they are a far better airline with far better crew.

Air NZ are far better run airline with better crew, their financial reports also back this up ;)
comparing apples and oranges. .. ones is a state run carrier with no real competition on its domestic gravy routes. The other is involved in a capacity stoush with a larger incumbent.

Airline management, crew quality and financial reporting are all quite distinct despite their obvious links.

I stick with my previous comment that not everyone will agree.

So you dont think Jetstar is competition for airnz on its domestic routes?

I've flown NZ once as VA platinum and the service was great. Front row of economy with the seat next to me blocked, cabin manager came and let me know they'd "recognised my status" with VA and gave me premium headphones and offered me a newspaper as well as priority customs card. Service was great the whole flight and I got a free meal when the rest of economy was paying for theirs.

On the way back from WLG to BNE I flew VA and got nothing that I didn't have to ask for (priority luggage tags, where the lounge was etc). On the plane the staff were short most of the time, and I asked if I got a meal with platinum to which the girl just responded no. I asked why I got one on NZ and her response was "well they probably realise they need to offer a similar level of service to us". I doubt she's ever flown NZ or she would probably have realised their service is already much better to start with!

I agree without doubt that NZ is a superior airline with superior service, and I think you'll find most of the customers of both agree. The best benefits from high-level Velocity come from the partners without doubt.

I'm a wp and Mrs clivem is a recent sg with VA and we normally always get good recognition ..... It's always been very good on trans-pac BNE-LAX-BNE VA7/8.... Always very good cross country BNE/SYD -PER also.
Of late we have been doing a lot of South Pacific trips normally in PE (there is no J) and have to say the service and recognition provided by the VA NZ based crews has been outstanding on every flight.

BNE - DRW runs are not so good even in J but then again they are cough flights (schd. wise) to start with.

Overall we really like the service VA is giving us and as small token if we are staying in the Sydney CBD (normally the QT) or in Melbourne we often drop by a Haigh's shop (easy to do in Melb. as I'm normally at the InterCont with a Haigh's at the front door) and buy a small box of their chocolates. We normally quietly give the small box to the CSM not long after boarding and ask her to share them with the crew. Not that we do it to get better service but a gee a little gesture in return does no harm at all and can go a hell of a long way.

Then you would be giving them towards the end of a trip to reward the staff for doing their job well

I received recognition from the security guard before the xray scanners at NTL the other week, I felt quite special, saturday afternoon JQ flight full of unprepared families having to have spelt out what they need to remove from their bags for scanning, and here I was all prepared next in line. and he said "just the usual routine sir thank you, you know how it works, " I said "I do, thankyou" and his repsonse, "well you'd be the only one all afternoon, thankyou for your patience"
