I did that once on a VA MEL-SYD flight.

Boarded late (after lounge boarding calls were made) and found a rather large bag under the seat in front of me. What ensued was a LOTFAP style panic of that bag being "unattended baggage". Fortunately it was in J of which the FAs were much more attentive!

Ha. Could you imagine that in LOTFAP? Fox News would cut into regular programming with a "possible terror attack at airport"; the national threat level would go up; the plane would be towed to a remote stand and passengers denied dismebarkation for hours; sniffer dogs sent on board . . .

I've asked multiply owners of bags to remove them, on all occasions they look embarrass and move it without further hassle.

Other favourites:

The seat buddies that like to place their legs in an extra wide V claiming as much real estate as possible.
The long arm octopuses that like to stretch their arms over the the back of the seat and leave them there
Recliners (no issue with recliners) that don't pull up during meal service
People that like to repack the OH bin and move your bag to another bin

As a matter of interest, how much of the under seat storage belongs to the person behind? On a recent flight, feet from behind were bumping into my feet.

All of it up to the bar going across the front of your seat. If your feet were under your seat, then you were in their space.

I agree with this. Non frequent users of aircraft are usually excited (especially if off on holiday) and in many contexts of day to day life, personal effects are frequently placed under ones own seat, not some other seat. I agree totally with the poster who suggested the first course of action is to politely hand the bag back and advise the lady it is to go under the seat in front or in the overheads. It would be a terrible display of rudeness to shove the bag further away or worse still, to deliberately hide it (may have all their holiday money and cards etc in it)!

If its a 'normal' airplane seat, it would require some effort to get it under your own seat if you were sitting or standing at your own seat space. It would have to be squeezed through the bar that's there. Else it requires a deliberate moving to the seat behind, and sliding it forward - AND ignoring the universal entreaties to put your carryon "in the overhead locker or under the seat in front of you". If they hadn't flown much, and didn't know the drill, then I doubt that they know where the life vests are

No, some people are just selfish and will try anything. I would have just put it in the aisle next to the seat in front and if I was feeling generous, asked the pax in front 'Is this yours?'

It isn't that hard to push it through. And it still doesn't automatically demonstrate rudeness. First course of action is to simply inform and not assume they know the rules.

Yes, some people are. Many are not.

I have never had someone's luggage placed in my foot space (occasionally I have had an odd shoe accidentally appear, which I just shove back gently), so despite the fact this can happen, I suggest its certainly not commonplace and courtesy costs nothing for those odd occasions.

This one really annoys me. If you're late boarding you should go find an overhead bin down past row 30 somewhere.

It's even worse when its the FA's doing it for a late boarder. They should tag the bag and fling it out the front door to be put on the next flight (not necessarily to the same destination).

On every full flight the FAs ask pax to place no more then 1 item in the overhead bin and the rest under the seat. If done properly it will ensure everyone have enough space for their luggage.
The problems are:
1. Some pax carry more then 2 items onboard.
2. FAs don't "force" pax to put anything under their seats and most put everything in the overhead bins to protect their legroom.

I agree. The provisions are already in place for on-board stowage to be a non-issue. All it needs is for the airlines to:
a) enforce the cabin luggage size/weight limits;
b) enforce the cabin luggage quantity/type limits; and
c) enforce the number of items per pax in the overheads (if necessary, which probably wouldn't be necessary if a) and b) were correct)

The trouble is, for some inexplicable reason, the airlines seem hell bent on being bullish with checked luggage limits but totally uninterested with cabin baggage limits. What's happening is totally predictable!

I expect the overhead bin above me to be mine and get the irrits when I watch dopey passengers walk aboard, locate their seat and then turn around to place their bags in the bin across the isle from where the are seated without even looking to see if the bin above their seat is available. These are usually the passenger who then stick their crotch in your face regularly throughout the flight to access something terribly important in their bag.

Late boarders can include those who get a late lounge announcement and no PriBoard ... As a HLO regular it irritates me when there is no bin space at my row because clearly others are taking more than their share.

As someone who sits often in row 4 aisle I get hit a lot, mostly on my shoulder

I'd say it would depend on the size of the bag. I have a small backpack which I carry on. I always take care of where it is and not swing it around into someone.

I've had people hit me with bags of every type as they walk down the aisle. It doesn't matter what sort of bag it is, they won't keep track of it and they will hit someone with it.

One of the last times I had a long haul in Y, I had my shoes off and under the seat in front during flight. The person in that seat kept taking them out from under the seat.

I would tend to agree with you, but I wonder if people on this board will really accept limitations being imposed on them. From what I have seen on this board, the prevailing attitude around here would more accurately be summed up by this post:

If they are weighing hand luggage then they won't be an option for me domestically. That I would consider to be LCC.

MrP has told me never ever book that seat for him. It's either bumping or the edge of the curtain.

The thing with backpacks is that when you are sitting they are face high. Other bags get you in the limbs.

Happy if they tell me I can put my piece of hand luggage in the O/H but everything else will get thrown into a carry on locker at the back of the a/c.
