Not really, I've read through her letter came along with the card, she got something like income protection insurance or something, but never mentioned about purchase insurance, perhaps that's a different offer, I gotta ask her to call up and check with the card centre I guess.

IIRC the CB Silver T&C booklet should explain the benefits of the purchase cover.

Thanks serfty for the reminder about this offer. Application approved <24 hours...

The purchase cover for both Silver and Gold cards was amended last year and has been severely curtailed in the event of loss.

Most goods are specifically excluded from loss cover if you lose them in a 'public place.' The definition of 'public place' is very broad.

In practical terms, if you buy (say) an ipod, a mobile phone, a camera, jewellery etc and leave it in an airport lounge, in the seat pocket on a plane, on a train, etc etc and can't recover it you will NOT be covered by Citi's purchase cover.

There are some circumstances where you would be covered but these are the exception - lose something valuable that was purchased with a Citi Visa card within the past 3 months and you won't be covered by the Card policy. Even if you are covered, the claims procedure for something that was lost/stolen is quite onerous (you must report the loss to police within 24 hours and provide the insurer with the report number, etc etc - hard to do if you've just flown out of the State/Country where the loss occurred.)

If you want cover, best to get it independently of Citi Visa.

My son, age 22, has just commenced his first professional job after graduating from Uni. His package is about $50K so he would meet Citi's income requirement for the Gold card.

However, when banks look at employment history, how many months/years of employment do they like to see before they approve a credit card application?

Good luck with that.

I'm 22 myself, I have a perfect credit rating, earn *much* more than 50k (I won't disclose what I'm earning :), have had a gold c/c with ANZ for 4 years now and a silver with Citibank for 2 years (with a limit of 6k); and still didn't get approved.. I think it's some sort of a luck game. That's with a solid employment with one employer for the past 2.5 years, too.

Have you got a copy of your credit report?

And the card (supplementary) arrived today. PINs for both cards in the same mail, to our home address, even though I noted a PO Box as the mailing address for security.

Primary card was missing so had to ring to cancel it.

Not the best start sorry CitiBank...

I've just successfully applied and received a Citibank fee free Gold Visa for my 22 yr old daughter who one month ago just started her first full time employment after graduating from uni. She’s on $51K.

She had been working casually while in uni, has got a CBA basic Visa and had a perfect credit record. She was conditionally approved within 24 hours and received her card a few days later.

A year ago she tried to apply for the Silver fee free Visa and got rejected because she was only working casually.

Did you in some way guarantee your daughter's debts - or did she make the application completely independently of you?

I only filled in the online application on her behalf. They're based completely on her own financial circumstances.

Hi Guys

Thanks for keeping this thread alive. I have been researching a good card for the past 2 days as the high annual fee put me off. i want a good card that can let me earn points for FFP. I just applied and the link still worked! Now just waiting for verification check with my employer and that should be it!

:)

welcome to AFF ellein

Given that the CB card is fee-free for ever plus the ability to earn 1:1 is a bigger bonus!

Has anyone tried using this card like a personal loan?

I phoned Citi today to check something, and they offered to mail me a cheque for any amount up to my credit limit, and they will only charge 6.9% for the life of the loan.

6.9% is pretty cheap... cheaper than my share trading margin loan with ANZ of around 8.9%.

The only catch I can see so far is that any time I pay money back, the money will be deducted from the loan first, not purchases. Given that purchases incur interest at 18%, then I suppose I shouldn't use this card for purchases anymore.

Are there any other catches? Or is my understanding flawed?

I recently tried to apply for this offer and got rejected on the basis of having an existing citibank silver visa card! HUH? anyone else come across this problem?

There were some earlier posts from others who had this problem. I suggest you tell them somebody else (eg. American Express, Westpac) has offered you a fee free gold card (I actually have both of those) and that you would keep the Citibank card if they could offer the same. They'd be pretty dumb to turn you down if you've been a good customer.

Hi guys!!!

I got my card yesterday and I have spoken to the card centre. she confirmed that it will be free for life (just be on the safe side). She said this offer may be still on-going depending on the credit rating and income etc of the applicants.. so go and try it!!

:)

I applied for the offer some time ago. I "declared" my existing Visa, Amex and (silver) Citibank credit cards, and said that if the application was successful, I would cancel the existing silver card. I was rejected.

About 4 weeks later, it was time for the annual renewal on the silver card. Rang them up to cancel it. Was shuffled from person to person, each time asked "why?". Told them each time. The last verbal offer was the gold card, fee-free for 1 year.

I now "make do" with a ANZ Qantas Visa, and an Amex Rewards Maximiser.

I'd ring them up but, as this thread shows, YMMV.

Update:

I have now been approved for a gold visa after much hassle and phone calls. Best bet is a call straight to the top - and a couple phone calls later from various departments to confirm/clarify certain details and I've now split my existing credit limit between existing silver visa (which apparently was a "Student" version from back in my uni days...) and the new gold visa. Though in my excitement I forgot to confirm it was indeed fee free forever - that'll be my next magic trick!
