Obese Pilot

Surely if the pilot passes his line checks, sim checks and medical checks, then he's "safe" (or at least as safe as anyone else who passes similar testing).

Agree with this statement doc. Does anybody know what these standards are here and in the states?

Obesity is a genuine issue many people have to deal with in any case and should be fully supported here.

Cheers Spruce

I is very easy to ay "oh yeah.. 375-400 lbs..." but with large folks I think overestimation is pretty easy...

Without evidence the guy was actually THAT huge (and we are talking about a weight level people like Larry the Cable Guy use as the outrageous example) I would be reluctant to comment at all..

What if he was actually 290? 275? At what point is it "OK"?

Gee Trooper I am 275 lbs and I was not big in the football crowd last night.
Australians are getting bigger due to "over-active teeth"
We come in all shapes and sizes and being concerned about a large pilot is not something we should have a problem with.
Thanks Markis10 for the regulations on health testing for pilots.

If he was a FA and in the public eye more I'm sure he would have been 'managed out'.

Are the regs the same for fat FA's?

I am so offended by the content of this thread and the fact that the administration of this forum has let this carry on without check after members including myself have complained, I don't want to be associated with it.

Therefore I have asked for my membership to be cancelled.

Sam and Hayden, good try chaps, pity your excellent points fell on seemingly deaf ears well above our level.

As one who is somewhat obese (my medico says I am, I just say I'm too short for my weight ;)), I have no problem with an obese pilot. What about all the pilots we don't get to see?

My main concern would be for the aircraft trim.

In the absence of other clinical indications, I am not sure there would be any need. In any case, who is to say his condition was not being managed?

I was reluctant to post a comment on this thread because peoples weight can be a sensitive issue. MunitalP, Admin could be away for the weekend, what about contacting the Mods?

that is a great shame, I'm very sorry to hear of this :( :(

I own you much thanks. The very least thing you did was the AFF luggage tags. Normally I wouldn't use such things at all but I finally pulled them out this last week. And there are much greater contributions that you have made.

Of course, I'm still puzzled about what there is to offend. The OP raises a legitimate concern about a medical condition. There are after all medical fitness requirements for pilots  Yet the OP does also miss the fact that medical tests do exist and the pilot must have passed them. Less then ideal but still not offensive.

I did get MunitalP's message about this thread, and I did respond to him.

In my judgement, the OP was not going out of his way to offend anyone, so I couldn't see why action should be taken.

After all this is a public forum, and diverse opinion are encouraged. (Provided our posting rules are followed.) I don't particularly agree with the sentiment of the OP, but that doesn't mean the thread should be deleted.

To take the heat out of the debate, I'm now going to lock this thread.
