Gordon, you've fallen for the airline spin as well. The extra $75 is not just taxes. It is taxes AND airline charges. It includes a substantial fuel levy charged by the airline (and IMHO for NZ completely ridiculous - being twice what they charge for equivalent domestic sectors and the same for SYD-AKL as they charge for SYD-LHR).

Yeah the !@#$ fuel surcharge allows QF to claim a very low price.

Someone was on the telly the other day reckoned we'd get $1 fares soon. Of course no mention of the surcharges which keep going up. The airlines (all of them not just QF) have been very silent lately on the surcharge with fuel prices falling (and the strong aussie and kiwi dollars helping too).

A reward MEL-AKL-MEL flight will set you back up to $150 in taxes, levies etc.

I agree with dajop; the fuel levys, insurance surcharges etc are 'fares by (not so) stealth". These really should be part of the fare quote and ipso facto not be part of award redemption costs. (Gov. departure taxes are different)

Still, you take what you can get; I availed myself of two of these fares for February & March, both for less than $400, currently they are about $550.

I travel to Kiwiland for work on a monthly basis and, as it's my own business, the cheaper the better. So I keep my eye out for these type of specials. The best fare I had this year was an AKL-SYD-AKL purchased in NZ$ for equiv AU$295. :D (I used QP pc in AKL Int J lounge for this)
