I've never had any problem with QF checking baggage through to a JQ flight, i've done it before with tight connections from HKG-MEL with QF, and then onwards to HBA with JQ.

Its not the through check that is the problem, it's the fact you still need to get it off the carousel, go through customs then recheck the bag, in the time frame it's not really doable. Thats if the OP were coming from an INT to a JQ Domestic, I don't believe the baggage will be through checked in this case as its INT to DOM then QF DOM to JQ on a different PNR.

QF won't interline bags from a QF domestic flight eg QF421 to an JQ domestic flight eg JQ707 so I don't see this being any different just because you originate in SIN on the QF2 .

We're not comparing apples with apples here as previously it was a QF int flight to a JQ dom flight. This time you've got that extra QF dom sector in your itinerary and that changes the ball game significantly. Expect QF to only check your bags through to MEL.

Paid fare or ASA or Classic?

Around what dates would you be coming back? I'd call up QF Premium Desk & ask about availability of JASA's ex SCL & if they can book it & waive the assistance fee given that you can't book it online (yes I would say it's a programming issue).

You can always check "U" class availability on Expert Flyer & if not currently available set some 'Flight Alerts' in "U" & "W" classes (J & PE) so you get an email when or if seats do become available.

I'm thinking of paying a one way fare back from LA for the two of us, putting in a request for an upgrade. I should still be WP and hopefully I'll organise Mrs Cat's life sufficiently to get her to that level as well (she's currently SG), so our chances of scoring an upgrade should be reasonable. We're returning at the end of March next year.
My suspicion would be that if I rang to ask about a JASA from SCL is that even if they exist, they won't be a bargain. No harm in trying, though. Not really interested in burning points on a Classic Award.

Before you even get to the nitty gritty of how many points are required you'll probably get the old chestnut "you'd be better of with a Classic Award because that's cheaper". If you can get past that, everything else is a bonus.

Ringing when people on Premium Desk are there definitely helps.

If you're looking a oneway LAX/MEL flights in March 2013 it's worth comparing the cost to return flights as there may not be much difference in the cost. This is assuming you would have a reason to travel to the US again later on in 2013.

Good point - hadn't thought of that. All these permutations make the eyes glaze over after a while, don't they? It would create a good excuse to go back in 2014...

Not sure how many ff points you have in the kitty a present however an ASA in PE LAX/MEL would cost 72K points plus USD467.62 pp which is available on QF94 on Mon/Tue 25/26 Mar 2013 but does have a USD300.00 cancellation fee. Can't see any JASA's or FASA's for March 2013 at this stage.

Class availability - I would say U class is available on the 66K option.

Thanks serfty

I think i'll try to get a couple of JASA's for 66k-ish points and a small amount of $$$

re: ( Now gone) "how do I book a J any seat award at classic award points level" thread.

Hi all,

What happens if you cancel a JASA? I think I read somewhere that they provide a $ credit instead of returning the points? How do they calculate the value of this?

Cheers

As always you need to check the fare rules, there are around 100 different ones in J and they vary from no refund to full refund, if it's full refund you need to cancel by ringing, by doing it online all you will get is a credit voucher for very little value.

The only impact will be on availability, plan early or look at it at 8 days, when some cheapies seem to come back in !

But does an ASA on BA still earn points? Found many when booking FASA to SIN!

There are usually many Partner Classic award F seats on BA (especially on the SYD-SIN and vv legs), but I don't think I've ever seen an FASA on BA code at 90K points. Instead, they are at the 1 point = $0.01 cost.

Not cheap but they are there....I also found CX ASA to HGK.

Do these code share or whatever they call them earn the same as QF ASA? Good to know if I or anyone else gets lucky & finds a cheap BA or CX ASA!

Wow, that doesn't look shabby at all. Puts A380 F within the reach of punters like me. $6,739 if cash.
