Well I finally signed us up for AAdvantage since there aren't likely to be any referral bonuses. It took less than 2 minutes between doing mine and doing my husband's and we didn't get consecutive AAdvantage numbers. Very AAnnoyed!

How far apart are the numbers?

With a company the size of AA it's quite possible that a few others will slip through in two minutes :!:

You may never get consectutive numbers as a security feature. There are many organizations that will not issue consecutive numbers so people cannot just add 1 to their own number, eg. banks their customer numbers and bank account numbers are produced using an algorithm where all the numbers will result in a validation number (like add the first 2 numbers multiply by the third etc will result in an answer of 3). Imagine if credit card numbers were consecutive, you would just add 1 to your account and you would know the expiry date (strong chances it is the same) of the other card.

That is right. The validation number is commonly called the "check digit" and this digit is usually added to the end or beginning of the number. The most common method used to add a "check digit" is the MOD 10 method.

Of course, if you know how the algorithm works you can generate your own. Or, if you know which transposition errors it doesn't pick up, if you have the right credit card number, you can shuffle the right numbers and the check digit will still be the same!
