Not all EK destinations in Africa have QF flight numbers.

I am looking to book MEL-DXB-DAR (Dar Es Salaam, TZ) and it looks like while there is a EK 725/726 direct flight combo between DXB and DAR, there doesnt appear to be QF flight numbers. The closest I can get in NBO on QF numbers, then have to take KQ (PW) to DAR from NBO.

A quick search reveals a similar situation for EBB, LOS and CAI. I am sure there are others. I for one am really disappointed that these EK flights dont have QF flight numbers. Does anyone know why? I thought most of the African and EU flights were going to get QF numbers.

For QF to put its code on an EK flight to a particular country, Australia would need to have a bilateral air services agreement or similar arrangement in place with that country. Australia does not currently have agreements in place with all EK destinations. See Australia's Air Services Agreements/Arrangements

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

ACC is still not available, even though it is part of the agreement.

Hadn't caught up on that this weekend - not a nice position to be in.

as a side note if you have a STOPOVER In Dubai the onward flight must be on the EK number when traveling to certain countries (Italy, Netherlands, France and others). For those countries with that condition you can only be in transit through Dubai to remain on the QF codeshare flight number.

While QF codeshare flight numbers are good (SC earning, status bonus, wider range of "eligible" earning booking codes) you do still get to earn QFF points on EK codes (providing its an eligible booking code). The "soft product" will be similar, with priority check-in, priority boarding, additional baggage allowance, priority wait-listing, advance seat selection, lounge access etc for QFF members flying on EK coded services.

So the only real difference is earning Status Credits (yep, that can be a biggie) and possibly no or reduced points earning depending on the booking code/class (yep, another biggie if it applies to you).

I have not traveled with EK, so cannot comment first hand regarding the onboard experience, but plenty of people seem to happy to fly with them, so can't be too bad.

I assume there is a commercial arrangement for an EK flight to carry a QF flight number, which means that somewhere at Qantas there will be bean counters trying to guestimate/predict the demand for QFF members willing to purchase QF-coded tickets (perhaps at a premium cost) for each EK routing. I assume that those that fall above the line are "on the list" (Mikado style) and those that fall below the line are up for elimination (so to speak). Regulatory and bilateral approvals of course will need to be in place for the routing too.

Yes I was trying to go SYD DXB NBO - thought it would coming online through the partnership. Online QF will not allow you to choose that route (if you put in SYD NBO, it routes you through Jo'berg with terrible connections) I phoned the premium line and they said yes no problem they can offer me a price for that route using QF to DXB and then EK to NBO - $14,500 for J!!
Looking on Expedia it quotes DXB NBO in J for $4,400 if booked through QF using EK flight or $1,800 if you book with EK direct - ridiculous.
Come on Redroo if you are going to offer 'new destinations connecting the globe' - do it!

Seems like you have a pretty simple decision then. Just book it with EK. At least you can earn AFF points for a J class EK flight (no SC though).

Hello All,

I am also trying to get to NBO and called QF today. I was able to find the routing on Kayak from CNS - NBO via DXB quoted as AU$5616. When I called QANTAS, their price was over $5900! The QF Rep said that they have not finalised price negotiations, so this route is only available as a full fare economy route. The promising thing I've noticed is that the QF flight numbers seem to have been assigned:

QF 8719 DXB - NBO 10:45 - 14:45
QF 8721 DXB - NBO 15:05 - 19:05

QF 8720 NBO - DXB 16:40 - 22:40
QF 8722 NBO - DXB 22:50 - 04:50 (next day)

QANTAS suggested that I keep watching it.... I also have noticed that over the past two days, the Emirates site has a timeout error on this route. Previously, it would quote the itinerary. So something is definitely going on, let's just hope that it's to our financial benefit.

I have been watching this route as well for a holiday in Aug/Sep 2014. I want to go F and I can book via Zuji or Travel for a flight on QF metal to Dubai and EK metal to Nairobi. If I book it as a Qantas booking it is $24K, as Emirates it is $11K. If Qantas ever gets around to putting it up at their site I will be monitoring carefully for sale fares, but otherwise I'll be booking it via Emirates. The status credit just don't mean enough for me to pay that much extra esp when I can get exactly the same flights. Not that this is new - I had the same scenario when we went to Tahiti in 2011 - we flew QF to AKL and then Air Tahiti to Papeete - QF only flies to AKL. Booking the exact same metal was $3k with Air Tahiti and $6K with QF - needless to say we booked with Air Tahiti.

Still not seeing options to NBO going via DXB so looks like we will be waiting for a few more weeks, 18th April maybe, before the options appear in the search engine? Might give QF a call tonight to see if I can find out any further info.

Frustrating as I'd like to lock in our honeymoon route to NBO sooner rather than later. Currently booked via JNB but would prefer DXB.

I called Qantas today to discuss. SYD-NBO will still be service through JNB. They could offer me a fare through DXB but still extortionate prices for the linked flight. Asked about separate tickets and was happy to know that they could book tickets on EK flights - excellent but they quoted nearly $1900 for what was showing on Emirates website at just over $1600 - same fare code, same restrictions and Qantas could not explain the difference.

In short I got the impression that this route is not coming 'onboard' with full QF flight numbers all the way through to NBO because of the OW links through JNB. As it is a busy time of the year (August) I have booked a sale J ticket with QF SYD to DXB and then taken a J ticket with EK for DXB to NBO - total just over $7,200 booking with QF for same fight numbers was twice the price. Not quite sure how this new alliance is opening up Africa???

As I have spent a bit of time researching this route and options - please feel to ask away and I will try to help out with any questions for others...

Cheers

Thanks for this mikejr

Very strange given the new Qantas inflight mag for April has updated route maps and the green line of Emirates links DXB with NBO and there is no line linking JNB with NBO.

I currently have 2 J tickets from SYD to JNB and am thinking of cancelling and doing the same as you but would prefer not to commit as I don't have any other $11k trips in the offing over the next 12 months to use the voucher.

Hmmmmmm . . .

Sorry not OW but 'affiliated/alliance' - with South African Airways

As far as I know you don't even get points or status credits for the JHB-Nairobi leg - so I can't see how QF can claim to be servicing it in that direction. You can definitely book a Qantas code share to Nairobi from Dubai, by going to a travel agent - just at a ridiculous price.

This still includes ACC - Accra, not available for sale on the website, yet it is included in the GDS at full Y fares. No one has a clue what is going on.
