Posted on behalf of Shrek:
He is flying SYD-SIN-CMB tomorrow. The SYD-SIN is on BA and SIN-CMB is EK. There is a 3 hour transit time at SIN and the flights are in separate tickets. He found out yesterday that he has to take a checked bag. I think that he will have to clear immigration in SIN, collect bags and re-check at EK check-in as BA will not interline with EK.
Is this correct ?

Tell Shrek to ask BA checkin tomorrow anyway, just in case they do have an agreement. If they say no & bags will be checked to SIN only, get him to see the transfer desk on arrival in SIN to see if they can not only check him in on the EK flight but arrange to have the bags re-tagged out the back thus avoiding having to clear customs.

If that's a no go, only then would he need to clear customs & collect his luggage before heading to EK checkin landside at SIN. Even if he does have to do this, things in SIN are pretty efficient so he probably wouldn't have to wait too long for his bag so he can proceed to EK checkin.

Singapore is different and it may be possible to stay airside - there was a thread on this recently.

SIN customs is very efficent.

I had to go over to the Budget terminal one night and it all happened in minutes as no probs at all.

The only issue I had was when I landed at the next destination I was asked by customs why did I come and go through SIN all in the same day.

I said transit to another terminal and it all was too easy.

Thankyou OBB, serfty and simmo, I have filled him in on the above advice and will report back what eventuates :)

Reporting back:
Asked at the BA check-in re interlining with EK, told no but keep baggage tickets and go to the EK transfer desk in SIN.
On arrival in SIN the queue was massive at the transfer desk but there was a sign directing J and F passengers to proceed to the Lounge for BP's.
EK lounge sorted the transfer efficiently and his bags arrived in CMB :)

I've got to say, without wishing to sound in any way poncey, it is so nice not to have to line up with everyone else in those situations, be it because of the cabin you fly in, or via status. :)

This is why we do the status runs, constantly check our status and forecast travel to maximise our status. I don't like queues at the best of times and airports are often not at the best of times...

Again confirming that there's 2 ways to go about this, the one you choose is down to personal preference. They both seem to work well.

Not in SIN but I had a similar experience recently travelling BKK-HKG-SYD in business connecting from CX to VS. Bags were not checked through to SYD in BKK but was told to stay in transit in HKG and go to transfer desk with luggage tags.

Got my boarding pass and luggage was tagged through to SYD without any glitches.
