Seems to be no virgin economy award availability in economy on any flight on any day from Hobart or Launceston to Sydney starting from wed 18 dec 2019. Been checking at midnight a few nights for the release of the new day and it seems they are not releasing. Business award availability appears normal and plentiful (qantas economy and business award normal and plentiful also). Not sure if this is normal for summer school holidays a long time in advance on virgin?

The seats are probably not being released because Virgin expects to fill those flights to 100% loads with fare-paying passengers.

Maybe just go business class?

Yeah, assuming economy flights out of tassie in school holidays must typically sell out more than the rest of the country. I need more seats than business class seats available, but will probably just book the available business and the rest in cash in economy (or wait and hope the release more seats in the future).

Is it worth trying to use your guaranteed economy reward seats assuming you hold status?
potentially... had been hoping to save for a rainy day, but 6 months in advance, unlikely to hold value for much else.

This sounds like a rainy day to me!
True. Probably just something more exciting. But agreed, if nothing pops up within next few months, will aim to use it in advance of the 6 month waiting period.

Revenue fares are about $100 each way, and right now get double status credits - totally wasteful use of miles from where I sit.

Thanks for the tip, 7th and 8th jan seem to have $109 fares out of Launceston and $139 out of Hobart. Would definitely just use cash if those prices become available on the right dates, appears those 2 days have award availability released too. Looks promising for cheaper fares and/or award availability later in jan! (We wouldn’t qualify for double sc’s unfortunately as after 28 dec)
The post was more an observation than anything else however and was interested in if this usual and if so whether they tend to release award availability in the future. I was just surprised, the reason I have changed my allegiance to virgin as I thought award availability in these type of situations was a given.

I was looking at SYD-LCN only yesterday and even in a pretty high fare class they were cheap, (about $180 o/w with discount code) and as flight goes SYD-MEL-LCN-MEL-SYD with the double SC on higher bucket fare yielded a ton of SC.

To me LCN is most times a mileage run spot, not a point burn destination!

I don't think Virgin flies to Balcanoona Airport ;)
