Checked in for my QF1/BA1404 flights SYD-SIN-LHR-MAN at Sydney T1 today. The agents were unable to check our bags beyond LHR because some issue about the length of layover. When QF sold me the ticket it was a 2 hrs layover, but after BA cancelled most of the daytime flights we were moved to the 8:30pm. Looks like we will have to dump our cases with left luggage at LHR unless BA let us check in early!

Eeep. Any ideas on what the max layover is for check through? I have been bumped to a 9hr layover on Monday and hoping that i can get them through on LHR>EDI

BA has all day bag drop from 0500 at LHR.
At least they do for those with OW status.
I think it’s now the same for everyone used to be 3hrs before if no status.

I wonder if it has anything to do with UK customs and immigration process? My understanding is the UK, like the US (and formerly Canada) when you land in LHR you must clear UK immigration and collect your bags for re-check.

Would love to hear if that's still the case.

No that’s not correct. There is no requirement to collect and recheck bags for Uk customs.

Your clear immigration at LHR if your connecting flight is in the UK, 2 sec process via e gates, but you do not have to collect bags if checked through.

You clear customs at final airport if you have something to declare, mind you at EDI there was no where to declare if coming in on a domestic flight even if you wanted to.

But if your bags do not make the connecting flight you need to fill in a customs declaration with your lost baggage case, if first flight on itinerary was outside UK.

Just to finish the story, we had lounge access on return to LHR T5 around 3pm. The 3 bags we checked in 12hrs earlier arrived safely at MAN. So a good ending to what started out as a worry. At the end of a 36hrs journey, got to our hotel at MAN and crashed.
