Not missing much, unless the SC's are important...

28 OCT 13MH 608 DISCOUNT ECONOMY 21OCT13 SINGAPORE/KUALA LUMPUR52--5210

I'm hoping to be able to give someone partner gold for Xmas and it will be line ball whether I make it. Currently expecting to be 2420 SCs at year end so any missing flights may matter!

I just got caught with the same thing assured by travel agent that would earn points.... However when checking fare class it was O no status credits or points and of course no interest from QF my mistake..

I've got an "MH flex fare family benefits" and on the second page of the printout it says YFXOWSG. Can anyone say what the fare class is?

It cost SGD315 for SIN-KUL in Y so I won't be impressed if it is non SC earning!

The fare class is always the first letter of the fare code, so Y.

This is generally the case and may be truly correct for MH, but K/Y/MUPP type fares come to mind as an exception.
I was posting in the context of MH fare rules, there are 200 airlines that have filed exceptions to IATAs guidelines!

Not necessarily, OP could have just made it last year or been comped then, we know QFF look at your past three years average, which IMHO is very much a fair system for dealing with life's little bumps (or baby's).
Not always the case though unless things have changed.

I made Platinum with exactly 1400 SCs. The next year I was comped Platinum ~8 weeks from reassessment date but I just made Platinum in my own right anyway and the year after the exact the same thing ~8 weeks from reassessment and just made Platinum in my own right.

Have not been comped Platinum since but that could more to do with securing Platinum well before reassessment date.

Things do change, that info was passed on at the recent QF Cash lunch and is probably the most current process AFAIK.

Well, actually it was your travel agent's mistake. Not really yours and certainly not QF's.

No comp to retain WP at 1170SC is reasonably harsh. Did the OP receive a comp to WP previously?

I've been WP for maybe 4 years. I have had a comp to retain WP once befor - after my first WP year. But I was well short and held no hope. Was surprised when I got the letter. And so this time after 4 years to be so short and have assumed it was going to happen based on these MH flights, pretty bloody dissappointing.

There is really no info on the MH site to define classes. I guess I have made the mistake of assuming OW airlines operate similar to Qf and all flight classes earn points. Without this transparency of booking classes, how is the average punter supposed to develop loyalty when a long time loyal flyer can get screwed like this.

I do feel your pain.

With the MH site you have to dig before and after booking to locate the fare class for each segment.

As posted my Markis10, the fare class is the first letter of the fare code with MH bookings. This can be found by viewing the fare rules (for which, unlike Qantas, there is a link).

I guess I have been in the FF game a long time as finding the fare bucket is one of my first priorities when booking - and, yes, I did find out the need for this the 'hard way', although I had time to recover.:-|

I'm in a similar boat. Although I need 180 SC to get to silver, but my 120 SC expire on 31 Jan. I am flying MH PER-DEL on Feb 2.

I was going to go on a status run prior to the MH flight, but I am pretty sure the $979 return fare price incl taxes wont be eligible for QFF points....

I got wise to this fare class thing many years ago when helping Mum understand crediting MH flights to Enrich.

In those days, and still now, the type of fare class you purchase affected the number of miles you obtained (and also status, since status on MH is measured in mileage). Some fares in those days didn't earn any miles at all (a la SQ until of late, and of course MH now offers Enrich miles on all fares, albeit a pittance on some).

My Mum found out the hard way and until I did some scouting it took me a while to realise what was going on. After that, we always made sure to check the fare class (though for Mum, fare class or not, the lowest price is the lowest price...)

What is the fare code in the fare rules?

Checking the MAS website, it seems that for the 4 economy fares sold BKK-KUL (return), only the higher 2 earn any points/SCs on QFF.

Economy Promo books in Q -> no QFF earning
MH Basic books in O -> no QFF earning
MH Smart books in V -> QFF earning
MH Flex books in H -> QFF earning

At the QF Cash lunch did they mention what the threshold is? ie average over 3 years should be min 1200/yr (3600 total) or 1400/yr (4200 total), or [1400+1200+1200]/3 = 1267/yr (3800 total)?

I believe they look at your rolling total over the three years and if its over 3600, should be OK, my own experience has seen this hold up with two bad years (both when the kids were born) seeing comps.

They do operate just like Qantas. It's pretty hard to find out on the QF website what fare code you book into when booking a flight to see if it's eligible for points earn on any of QF's OW partners. QF screwing long time loyal flyers of other OW airlines?

I haven't kept the same impaccable records that many in this community do, so now I can't see my full history. But I'm pretty sure it goes roughly like this...
2009 - gold
2010 - cruised to WP with over 2400 SC's
2011 - just under WP but comp upgrade
2012 - made it to WP on my own with about 1500 SC's
2013 - dropped to Gold by bein 30 SC's short.

Strictly speaking this goes by the rules...but leaves a pretty bad taste (of substandard lounge drinks) in my mouth now. And I'm going to miss the FLounge Eggs Benedict and Wagyu Beef. Anyway... I won't be travelling so much now making it even harder to requalify. I probably could have kept making it to WP retain level.
