No details of stop-over on itinerary

Hi All

I’m due to fly from Sydney to New York early October with Qantas, the flight is 21 hours and 25 minutes and my itinerary notes a stopover in Los Angeles, however no other details.

Any frequent flyers to the U.S able to tell me if this is unusual? Would we stay on the plane while they re-fuel or would we swap planes, I find it odd there are no details on the time we land in Los Angeles and catch the connecting flight to New York.

I understand this might be a silly question, however I hardly ever fly and this has me stumped.

Would our bags go directly to New York or would we have to collect, then check in again at LAX to travel to New York?

I believe you will need to collect your bags at LA, go through customs and immigration and then recheck your bags through to NY. They will be pre-tagged for that.

Your flight details (which carrier) will be on your ticket.

Presuming you are flying on QF the whole way, you will arrive in LAX, go through US immigration, collect your bags and then walk up a ramp. At the top of the ramp, you hand the QF staff your checked bags (they will have been tagged through to JFK when you first checked-in in Australia). You then go through security again and are back in the departures area. There's normally about a two hour gap between your arrival time into LAX and your departure. Note that, even though your flight number stays the same (QF 11), the actual aircraft will change. The flight LAX-JFK is operated by the B747 that has come in as QF 15 from BNE.

Search for the flight numbers. QF107 now QF17 and QF11.

Ive done it before. There are staff around once you get through customs to point you in the right direction.

I did it in February. It is a JohnPhelan said. Immigration in LAX has improved and was quite quick when I touched down. Hand in your baggage and walk outside the International terminal, turn right walk 200 metres and you are in the American Air terminal 4, head thru to the AA lounge if a member for a shower and a snack otherwise find a comfortable spot to eat or drink or watch who is going where until your flight is called.

The plane must land in LAX as it has insufficient fuel to make it all the way. You must leave the plane and go through customs and immigration at LAX. I'd expect a total of 90 mins for all of this to happen.

In the USA, immigration is always done at the first port of call (i.e., LAX, in your case). So, everybody gets off the plane.

Then after the baggage collection/immigration/etc/etc shuffle at LAX, you get onto another aircraft for LAX-JFK.

Yet no immigration on the way out of the USA, bizarre.

You depart from LAX TBIT again so there is no need to head over to T4 the AA terminal as mentioned by Traveler1955. If you have lounge access use the OneWorld lounge in TBIT. I did recently, had a shower before continuing on.
