Nine News Bulletins and AVOD

Hi All,

I must admit that I enjoy getting the latest news on my flight, particularly if I've been away a few days with meetings in the evenings etc, it's nice to catch-up on the less detailed analysis that reading a newspaper would bring (I like to be lazy and a little informed!!)

However, I've noted a bit of a trend. I think I'm currently 6/7 failure on my last few trips where the aircraft had AVOD (737, 330 and refurbed 767) whereas I'm practically the opposite where the entertainment is via the overheads ... even the old rubbishy 767's seem to manage to get timely delivery on Betamax!!

Why is it so difficult to get the News enabled (surely on the 738s which still have overheads, the bulletin is streamed to them rather than physical hardware delivery) on domestic AVOD flights?

I'm almost at the stage where I sigh a little if I walk onto a 737 and see seat-back screens, heck I've even resorted to watching docos on Hitler ... is this healthy??

The afternoon news is recorded at around 2pm which in the Internet age is like an eternity. I honestly can't understand why anybody is still interested in those bulletins. No offence intended.

My experience is similar. More often than not, it isn't available. Very frustrating.

Again, not to cause offence, but 10 mins in the lounge on one of the mainstream news sites would be the go. You'd get far more info for little effort (which seems to be the preference).

Or download the newspaper onto an ipad whilst waiting in the lounge - will be much more up to date.

I'm generally only interested in finding out whether the show after the news will be a Mythbusters/ Two and a half men/ Modern Family that I haven't seen 5-15 times already that month.

I've become very good at sleeping for the entire flight..

There is also another downside to the 737's with AVOD. The loss of live ABC radio streaming. Soon, the days where you could listen to live AFL games and or Cricket Matches and of course Hourly News Bulletins will be lost forever

I didn't think it was betamax but rather DAT tapes http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Audio_Tape

Betamax as in "old technology done good" as opposed to whatever transportation mechanism is used to deliver the bulletin to the AVOD system and is "new technology done bad".

Sort of like: in the old days, you'd get a letter in the post to tell you of QFF programme changes and you knew the changes worked, whereas these days the website goes walkabout for a couple of days and you get an email a week later spruiking the "enhancements based on customer feedback".

Surely the News is delivered wirelessly to the AVOD systems - have QF forgotten to pay their mobile phone bill?

I thought that the ZX's did not receive the refit as they are getting the chop currently.

In someways the IFE on the 733 and 734 on Qantas of past were worlds in front of any other airline in the world. You got on a flight with IFE that showed a short feature then the news then one of the 20 minute or so comedy shows it was the stuff you came to rely on.
When I travel then I am not likely to sit and watch the news or watch any news for that matter. Once the news and any other Qantas news was finished then I could then go and listen to the 12 audio channels if I didn't like what was on the main screen. ABC on channel 2, Talking business on channel 3, plus the other music and comedy and then Reeling in the years can also be good on channel 12. Maybe it was just predictable, when the rest of your life and work can turn to cough you could rely on Qantas to provide a decent flight with something to eat and something to watch and listen.

Umm you can still experience that world on 60% of flights ex CBR...

I thought that the ZX's did not receive the refit as they are getting the chop currently.

One by one they go, including one at the jet base with plain tail.

Just had a refurb and confirmed the tapes are gone, streaming and a DVD now being used.

I still fail to understand why it's such an issue getting the latest News Bulletin enabled on the most up-to-date entertainment systems ...
