PJM and I are enjoying this right now on QF653 SYD-PER. First time I’ve tried it. Impressed.

Very drinkable now. I had a choice of 19/20/21 in fact so choose the 19 which gets good reviews. Lovely nose, lavender, plumb, cassis, nice tannins.

Wine markups at Otto are fairly high (like most restaurants) but the Sassicaia, while very expensive, was not much more than retail.

Main thing I like about Otto is they are BYO. Not easy to find a good restaurant in BNE that offers BYO these days.

Aalto is their second wine which is crafted from 40-80 year old vines planted in seven different villages in the Burgos province along with some fruit from Aalto’s own younger vineyards. The wine is aged in French and American oak for 16 months to help soften the firm tannins and add extra polish and complexity to the cuvee. This is a dark and handsome Tinta Fina that’s bursting with ripe cherry, cassis, spice and coffee bean notes which evolve on the palate into wild berry, dark chocolate and leather.

Ok, I finally get this wine now. Previous bottles cracked in 2017 was just too young. Really plush wine with plenty of fruit still. Pencil shavings galore too with lots of acid and tannins, but nicely balanced. Drinking very well now and will go another 5 years at least.

I think it was the Irvine Grand Merlot that won the wine of the night at that Westfield Chinese byo restaurant about a decade ago. My God, what a night that was. I think they held up the place for us till about 11pm, then off to a city office to further indulge with some supurb west Oz cabernet. Oh, what a night, what a fun night. I wanted to walk back to my hotel and so walked for about 30 minutes before realising that the harbour bridge was getting larger and larger. Should have realised earlier I was walking the wrong damn direction. Finally knocked on ourhotel room around 4am and slept in till 2 that arvo. Slightly dangerous, slightly stupid, stupendous memories. Twas a blue moon in more ways than one.
