Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

I usually pull my weekly red out of the frig on thurs and puttit on a rack
God knows why , but this was beside it on the rack and I opened on friday nite by mistake.
I got the red ,put a stopper in the Sem & in the frig , deciding to have a sip during the week.

Vinegar with a hint of too-long steeped green tea

I went to the Howard Park members tasting at the Ritz Carlton on Tuesday night. As always a fantastic event with some excellent wines, including many back vintages. Their sparkling wines are really excellent and worth trying.

Last night was my wine club tasting. Theme was Spanish wines. Only a small turn out but a great evening.

Nice to see a few erudite guesses but sadly my stunning prize must go unawarded.
It was/is actually drinkable, quite dry with the sem sweetness all gone.
The taste.. er well…not wonderful.. a bit woody..
I recall that I had kept it for a party piece with a group of wino's sometime but sadly it did not happen
Summary : Interesting : over the hill but sometime in the last 10 years it was probably quite pleasant plonk...

A family member who is a part time wine drinker opened this on Saturday night, and couldn't stand it. I think it was their first foray into proper aged wine and they'd been sitting on it for years.

I offered to take the rest after some text exchanges, and my god it's amazing. I'm guessing she didn't like the tertiary characteristics that have come through as it's a beautiful wine. Still full of fruit and tannin but with that leather oak and licorice from age. Hoping it will last a few days as I'm not drinking it all on a Monday night 🤣

So, am I unlucky or just impatient? We have some close friends over every year for a pre-Christmas lunch and I always get out something special. However much I try, nothing ever lives up to expectations, including a 2013 Basket Press a few years back that was corked (and later replaced). This year I got out a Meshach, filtered it into a decanter, let it sit for 2 hours then poured back into the cleaned bottle and poured glasses using an aerator. The cork smelled good, but to drink it had some fruit and pepper, but very little aroma. We drank it over the next hour and it didn’t really open up at all. This one came from BWS as a half price clearance, I am wondering if it is false economy to buy that way if the way the were stored has an impact on the wine?
