Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Out of interest how many imbibers imbibed and what sort of side nibbles goes with these?

There were 10 of us last night. Some fully spit, some partially spit and some go all in. The Marchand and Burch bottles weren't full. They were left overs from someone who attended a different tasting.

We use Mayfair Lane in West Perth for our tastings. We order some charcuterie and other platters to nibble on during the tasting. Most of us stay on for dinner which we order prior to the start of the final bracket and then have the left over wines. I went with steak last night which was seriously good. One of the best steaks in Perth.

I'd actually highly recommend Mayfair Lane for excellent gastro pub style food, but also a very well considered wine list too.

And the wine of the night was ....

Went to the Katnook Odyssey by a slim margin. There was also a 1998 Penfold Bin 389 which was unfortunately corked.

Tuesday night going hard....crikes, you'd want to be working from home the next morning !!
Looks like a great night.

Ahead of Grenache day this Friday my +1 (who is big fan of the grape) suggested to celebrate Grenache week and I wasn’t going to argue with that :)

The first pair is one I was exited to try. Both Vanguardist MVGs got high scores and great reviews so I was looking forward to drink them side by side.

We opened both at the same time and gave them an hour to decant. We had half of each bottle on the first night and finished them the second day.

On the first night the 2018 was the star, it felt much more open and ready to drink while the 2019 wasn’t showing much character in comparison.

On the second night the 2018 stayed the same, still drinking beautifully while the 2019 finally opened up showcasing some of the magic everyone’s talking about.

Overall, at this point in time we preferred the 2018. That’s not to say 2019 was inferior, on the contrary, the second night showed us it has bigger potential but it’s just not ready yet. I bet in a year or two it will be a monster!

Happy Grenache Day!

Today’s duo (consumed over the last two days) come from Tonic wines.

Starting with 2019, very light in colour and taste. Flavours of red fruit but not much complexity beyond that. It’s an easy drinking Grenache but no wow factor.

To get a window into the 2019s future we opened the 2015. Both vintages scored the same. Colour was more brownish and flavours well developed. I will not use fancy words to describe and will just say it aged beautifully!

Now I understand the experts scores, they can see the potential in young wines much better than me (obviously).

Line up for tonight/tomorrow.

Opened up the Paralian and the Farmilo so far, quite enjoyed the former, found it quite whimsical.View attachment 227749
Keen to hear about the Tokaji and how it compare to our Rutherglen Tokay.

Edit: Looking into Tokaji it doesn't appear to be fortified at all and the high sugar is derived purely from botrytis

I've actually had the Azul Tokaji before - we had it blind as part of WSET where they were trying to show us the difference between botrytis and appassimento.

The Tokaji blew my mind as I'm not usually a sweet wine type of guy, but it just tasted like liquid honey without the glugliness - acidity really helped offset the sweetness.

Will see how I find it when I retaste tomorrow, I picked it up as I have a friend coming over and his partner basically just likes moscato.

Haven't had the Rutherglen though.

If you liked that and haven't yet tried, go find some German Rieslings at Spatelese levels and above. I think you'll enjoy it.

Will check it out, always happy to try something new, but typically not enamoured by sweet wines. Had some sauternes as well and have one ordered via Langtons but didn't find it as smashing as the Tokaji.

Most of our funds are funnelled towards pinot/grenache at the moment - the CFO at home seems to really like the latter varietal.

Whilst on the pinot theme, had another gippsland one, currently on spesh at Dannys from late twentees to $25 nett, the 2017 Lightfoot and Sons Myrtle Point pinot. A lovely wine nice cherries up front, great body, lingering flavours, not a single point out of place. Very well made indeed. Now in comparison to the Bellvale I would give the points to the Bellvale probably because it is slightly fuller but from memory, slightly sweeter and the Lightfoot would suit those who prefer a dryer styled pinot. But both certainly get above 8/10 from me. I plan to revisit the bellvale for sunday night dinner. The 2012 Blue label pinot for $12 at Bocaccios is still pretty good, in fact bang for buck it wins in this three horse race but we know it's not all about that. It's fruit flavour is a bit muted as you'd expect, it fits in the medium to full weighted style like the Lightfoot but there is a distracting, dry end taste which lingers on the palate. the other two are seamless, the twelve bucker isn't so for me, the bellvale is still the winner of the last seven variants. Then again that Gappled yarra valley one special as well. Has to be a champ versus challenger on these two later on. Can't wait till dinner time.
